Holocaust Survivor Presentation

“You are the last generation.  Your children will not have this experience…”
These words, directed to an audience of high school students by Eva Olsson, a holocaust survivor, had a profound effect.  Students from Mrs. Niebauer’s Enrichment class and Mr. Strittmatter’s AP History class were in attendance at Penn Highlands Community College as Dr. Olsson spoke recently.  Many of them described the event as life-changing and were grateful and outspoken regarding the experience.  We would like to thank the Education Foundation for providing the funding to make this trip possible.

When the opportunity to bring Dr. Eva Olsson here to speak to all of our students and our community arose, there was no hesitation.  Now ALL CCHS students will have the incredible opportunity to attend a presentation by Dr. Olsson on May 7th.  Dr. Olsson will tell her remarkable story of survival which is accompanied by a slide show containing images that parallel her experiences. Dr. Olsson spent time in both Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps during WWII.  We believe this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime event and an extraordinary opportunity for our students.  Eva Olsson’s message of eradicating hate is told through her amazing story of surviving the torment of, what she calls, the Nazi bullies.

*In addition, CCHS will host an evening presentation by Dr. Olsson for the community on May 7th at 6:00 PM.  All students, parents, faculty, board members, and community members are invited to attend this presentation to be held in the auditorium. Please see the attached flyer for more information.

GOLD and BOLD

The sixth annual GOLD (Girls Only Leadership Development) and BOLD (Boys Only Leadership Development) days were held on Saturday, March 29th, and Saturday, April 5th, respectively. On these days, fourth and fifth grade girls and boys from Cambria and Jackson Elementary gathered at Jackson Elementary School and participated in a variety of activities.
The various activities touched upon the topics of leadership, wildlife conservation, team building, drug awareness, and being unique. Area volunteers assisted in conveying the messages to the students. Sergeant 1st Class Goughnour and 1st Sergeant Bruno discussed leadership and how it is important to share ideas and help others to reach a common goal. Seth Mesoras and Mike Nelson, Wildlife Conservation Officers, shared a variety of animal pelts and talked about how students can help with animal conservation simply by following the rules of the game commission. St. Francis athletes, from both men’s and women’s teams, promoted teamwork and showed the positive results of working as a team through hands-on activities.
Brittany Foreman and Brenda McDevitt, AmeriCorps members at Jackson Elementary, organized the events. They would like to thank all of the following volunteers that helped to make the retreats a success: Alisha Beamer, Blacklick Valley AmeriCorps; Brianna Gillin, CCMS AmeriCorps; Lindsey Overdorff, Greater Johnstown AmeriCorps; and Shannon Gironda, guidance counselor intern. They also want to thank the following high school volunteers who kindly gave up their Saturdays to help out: Krista Ream, Tori Shaffer, Aubrey Brown, Molly Pilcher, Tia Bodenschatz, Kaitlyn Long, Taylor Mazzerella, Adrianne Kuhar, TJ Adams, Brody Lawerence, and Tommy Opdenhoff. Lastly, Brittany and Brenda would like to thank Mrs. Murin, Mrs. Mesoras, and Dr. DiLeo for their cooperation in putting these events together.

Hall of Fame Dinner

Three students will represent CCHS at the Greater Johnstown Chamber of Commerce Business Hall of Fame Dinner on April 25th.  Dom Stevens has been selected as the Junior Achievement Keynote Speaker, while Hannah Schofield and Sydney Noel will act as JA Ambassadors.  While attending this prestigious event, the students will have the opportunity to meet the "who's who" of the Cambria-Somerset business community - which is important as all three have expressed an interest in business careers.

Seventeen students traveled to UPJ on April 9th to participate in the STEM Professions Day.  The students are the first students to enroll in our Exploring Stem Concepts course to begin next fall.  The program was designed to encourage high school students to investigate and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.  Accompanied by Mrs. Ridgeley, the students attended workshops sessions that  included: Concrete Canoe, Drones and Quad-copters, Water Bottle Rocketry, Science – Fun and Game, Bird Brain, DNA Isolation, Conservation at Your Back Door, Building a New Brand: Product Launch, Tweeting Leadership, Digital Media, Project Protect, and SPACE (Symposium for the Promotion of Academic and Creative Inquiry).

Relay For Life Fundraiser A Great Success!

Thank-you to everyone who came out to support our Relay for Life event on March 26th!  The Faculty v Students’ basketball games lived-up to the high expectations that were set with the women’s faculty and men’s student teams taking victories for the night.  The fundraiser was a great success; between the games, food, baskets, and activities, we were able to raise over $3,000 for our cause!  Again, thanks to all our supporters, and we look forward to seeing you again next year for a rematch!
