Students Job Shadow as Part of Sophomore Career Class

On December 11th, forty-nine students participated in job shadowing as part of their sophomore career class, Futures. Students were placed in various locations throughout the Ebensburg/Johnstown region to help them gain a better understanding of possible career interests. Previous to job shadowing, students conducted assessments, researched careers, and received lessons on professionalism and interviewing. For many, this experience was their first opportunity to be in the work setting and substantiate their current career decisions

Overall, Students returned from the trip feeling energized about their experience and anxious to try it again. When asked if students would consider a career in the area visited, one student interested in Software Development and Information Technology stated this about his job shadow:

“ Yes! They (Shadow Location) reassured me that I had chosen a good career path and they helped answer my burning questions. They were able to show me more of what can be accomplished in this field. I would work for them in a heartbeat.”

When asked about her favorite part of job shadowing, another student said this about her experience at a local hospital:

“I actually got to watch an actual operation. I was about 2 feet away from where it was happening. I got to see everything that was going on.”

Central Cambria would like to thank all the businesses that participated in this experience. A special thanks to Goodwill Industries for helping us coordinate the job shadows. The Southern Alleghenies Career Education Partnership (SACEP) at Goodwill connects local students and school personnel with businesses, organizations, and community agencies by coordinating in-school and out-of-school career exploration and education events in the region.

Job shadowing has become a significant component of the Career Education Program at Central Cambria and is now offered as a new option for the senior project. Any student interested in job shadowing should contact Career Counselor, Ms. Condor, in the High School Career Center.

Central Cambria Middle School Students Help Others Stay Warm!

Blanket Initiative

Region #6 of the Homeless Children's Initiative asked school districts from the coverage area to put together No Sew Blankets. These blankets would be donated to the homeless shelters in Armstrong, Cambria, Blair, Indiana and Jefferson counties. Families enter the shelters for many reasons, house fires, domestic violence, eviction, loss of employment to name a few. Children, at any age, need to have something that makes them feel more comfortable whether that be for warmth or security. This is why the project of the blanket was chosen for the project. CCMS students completed blankets to donate to this worth-while cause.javascript:void(0)

Grant Received

We have received two grants so far. One is from the First Book - Johnstown. This grant allows us to purchase $1,000.00 for Reading Competition, Title One Reading Program and Guidance. After we are completed with the books at school, they will be sent home for you to keep and read with your children. The other grant is through the Highmark Healthy High 5 grant. This grant is to enhance our "No Bullying Allowed Program". We received $7,791.00 for teacher training, consulting, resources for parents and students and programs for the students.

Student Leader Program

About every four weeks, six students will be selected from the fifth grade to assist with different projects like Meet the Teacher Night, Parent/Teacher Conference, New Student Orientation, etc. Every fifth grade student will have a chance to participate throughout the year.

Caught Caring Program

We are offering a "Caught Caring Program" here at Jackson Elementary School. This program correlates with our "No Bullying Program". Students could be caught at any time at any place. When students are caught doing a caring act, teachers, school personnel, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, parents and community members can catch them in the act. We have certificates that can be completed and returned to the office. The students' names are announced with the caring act that they did and who caught them. The students are asked to come to the office and receive a little incentive for doing the caring act. Their certificates are displayed in front of the office for everyone to see. We want to promote a positive environment where everyone feels like they belong. If you want to participate, please contact the office for the certificates. Thanks for your cooperation!!

Boat Trip

As part of the Social Studies curriculum and the study of Pennsylvania history, the 8th grade students and their teachers had the opportunity to travel to Pittsburgh on September 23rd to participate in the "Lords of the Mon" interactive learning program. The "classroom" presentation was held on the Gateway Clipper ship - "Princess". The classroom journey began with the students viewing a film entitled "Steelmaking Capital of the World" to help them visualize the city of Pittsburgh when steel was king. Discussion followed about the immigrant influence and how the ethnic background of individuals influenced jobs, social positions and the role they held in society. The presenter linked some of the steel barons of Pittsburgh, like Frick and Carnegie, to the Johnstown region when she told of how they were part of the South Fork Hunting and Fishing Club and the devastating flood that destroyed the city in 1889. As the students cruised the river, river life was discussed and they had the opportunity to see what is was like working on the river. The student volunteers had the chance to dress up like steel workers and deck hands to experience firsthand what it is like to be involved in the steel industry. It was a great day and much was learned by all.

Red Devil Classic

The Fourth Annual Central Cambria Red Devil Classic was held at the Ebensburg Country Club on Friday, June 27, 2008. Proceeds from the event benefited the Central Cambria Education Foundation (CCEF).

A mid-round torrential downpour did not deter the field of 72 golfers from having fun and raising money for a most worthwhile cause. Approximately 40 local businesses and individuals lent their support through tee sponsorship, cash and door prize donations, as well as goods and services.

The golf course was in excellent condition, which aided the first place team of Dave Kaschalk, Mike Kaschalk, Jim Dodson and Joe Ponchione coming in 11 under par. Additionally, Joe Ponchione, Jim Dodson and Dave Tulowitzki pocketed skill prizes during the event.

All of the golfers enjoyed a barbeque lunch of hot sausage, hamburgers, hot dogs and sides. The outing concluded with a steak dinner and the awarding of skill, place and door prizes. In fact, the door prizes were so plentiful that every golfer went home with something.

The Central Cambria Education Foundation is a registered non-profit that provides funding in the arts, music, sciences, athletics and many other endeavors to the student body of Central Cambria. CCEF has underwritten programs such as Girls in the Middle; Music Camp; Math Camp; Kindergarten Camp; After School Fitness Fun; Junior Ecology Adventure Camp; and many, many other wonderful programs.
