Dickens of a Christmas!

For “Dickens of a Christmas” this year, Ms. Deb Ley from First Student Transportation and Mrs. Becky Klezek, our transportation coordinator, were given12 trees from Fleming’s Christmas Tree Farm in Indiana. They asked each grade level (K-5) from Jackson Elementary and Cambria Elementary Schools to create a theme and decorate one tree. Everyone who visited the “Dickens of a Christmas” event had the opportunity to pick their favorite tree for a $1.00 donation. The second grade from Cambria Elementary School received the most votes. They made a Santa themed tree as seen in the picture. They will be having a pizza party to celebrate. This event raised $424.83 and all proceeds will go towards the Ebensburg Regional Inclusive Playground. Ms. Ley and Mrs. Klezek will be purchasing the pizza for the children. A special thank you to them, Fleming’s Christmas Tree Farm, and to everyone who participated! Great job!

Early Thanksgiving Day Surprise for Jackson Elementary Student

Students were called down to the gym to surprise first grader Audrey Gokey with a special Thanksgiving day surprise. Mike Gokey returned from being deployed for the last four months. Audrey had no idea that her dad would be surprising her at school. Students gather in the gym waiting for a special speaker, which was Mike. He and Audrey’s mom, grandmother and sister were all hiding in the storage closed waiting for the signal to come out.

Central Cambria School District National Honor Society

Mitchell Vogatsky and Josh Remillard, Central Cambria seniors and members of the Central Cambria School District National Honor Society, have been nominated to compete in the National Honor Society scholarship program for this school year.

Mrs. Kimberly McDermott, principal of Central Cambria High School, announced the nominations, which places Vogatsky and Remillard in the national competition. This year, the program will award more than $200,000 in college scholarships. Special recognition and additional awards will be presented to state and regional winners. One national recipient will receive a $13,000 award. Mrs. McDermott stated “It’s a difficult decision to select just two students to represent CCHS in these areas.  Mitchell and Josh made that decision easier, as they both are student leaders who make a consistent positive impact on our school community in everything they do”.

High school National Honor Society chapters from across the country were eligible to nominate a limited number of senior NHS members to compete. Nominees are selected on the basis of their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, and general academic record.

“Students nominated for the NHS scholarship not only demonstrate academic excellence, but also excel in the areas of service, leadership, and character,” said NHS Advisor Mrs. Michelle Shirk. “In recognizing leadership in co-curricular activities as well as academic performance, the NHS Scholarship program highlights the importance of a well-rounded education.”

Fuel Up to Play 60 Program

On Wednesday November 6, members of the boys and girls cross country teams participated in the kick-off event for the Fuel Up to Play 60 Program at Jackson Elementary. Fuel Up to Play 60 is an in-school nutrition and physical activity program launched by National Dairy Council (NDC) and NFL, in collaboration with the USDA, to help encourage today’s youth to lead healthier lives. Fuel Up to Play 60 helps students make positive changes in their schools by improving opportunities to consume nutrient-rich foods and get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. The runners showed the elementary students some activities they do to stay in shape, discussed the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle and how it all translates into being an all-around better student.

Post High School Opportunity Fair

Eighty seniors attended the Post High School Opportunity Fair at the Altoona Area Field House on October 2nd.  Over ninety colleges, universities, career schools, and military branches were represented.  Students had the opportunity to ask questions of the representatives and were provided a wealth of information about the schools in which they are interested.  In addition, job services and financial aid organizations were represented.

On the bus ride home, Mrs. Dixon spoke to a senior who mentioned that the Susquehanna University representative commented to this young lady on the overall attire worn by CCHS students. The Susquehanna University representative went on to say how encouraging it was to see high school students who were appropriately dressed and represented their school district so well.  On behalf of Mrs. Dixon, Mr. Wilson, and the seniors who attended the Post High School Opportunity Fair, we would like to thank the Board for funding the transportation and permitting us to participate in this very worthwhile event.

Homeless Awareness Week-----Oct. 28- Nov. 1.

The Central Cambria National Honor Society and the Interact Club are coordinating a district-wide Homeless Awareness Week October 28 – November 1.  Students become homeless for many reasons, including fire, domestic violence, and loss of income for the family.  All students received the attached flyer and may bring in items to help support the students in our schools and in our area that are homeless.  On November 1, we are asking everyone in the district to wear a Blue Shirt to school to show CC’s support for our friends in need.  Thank you for your support and generosity!

 Awareness Week
October 28-November 1, 2013

To Central Cambria Parents and Students:
Did you know now that the average age of a homeless person is nine years old? Many students become homeless for various reasons; fire, flood, domestic violence, or loss of income for the family.  Students are homeless by living in shelters, cars, campers/tents and even living with family or friends due to lack of housing.
The Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness Program in Pennsylvania is a state funded organization which provides support to our children that become homeless.  If you would like to help your fellow classmates, and many others that are experiencing homelessness, you can bring in items (which are listed on the back of this page) during the week of October 28- November 1, 2013.  On November 1, to show our support to our friends in need, we are asking everyone to wear a Blue Shirt to school that day.
Thank you for your support!!
The Central Cambria National Honor Society and Interact Club.

CCHSGT?

English Enrichment students in grades 9-12 were given an amazing opportunity to work with a true international professional in the field of entertainment.  Former CC Alum, Mark Swanhart, invited Mrs. Heather Niebauer and this group of students to York, PA where they were able to observe as he directed the America’s Got Talent tour. Based on the popular NBC TV show, Mark took the raw talent of several of the performers who made the semi-final round and created a visually appealing show that will travel the country.

Students were able to view what the people in the business call a “tech” rehearsal, which consisted of working out setting, video, timing, sound, and lighting while each of the cast members performed live. Along with the fun of meeting and watching the individual performers, students got to see all the technicians hard at work behind the scenes. The students were literally immersed in the rehearsal because they had the good fortune of sitting right alongside the technicians, acting as the studio audience. Mark would periodically explain to the students exactly what he or another technician was doing. After lunch, Mark coordinated a question and answer session for the CC group. Many students had questions that concerned the business and career opportunities of his work, along with personal questions for Mark regarding his own career path. The overall message was one of setting goals, pursuing dreams, and respecting those you meet along the way.

Guest Speaker Emphasizes “Life Lessons”

Congressman Keith Rothfus and two office staff met with students from Mr. Aurandt’s Law/Current Events and other students from Mr. Miller’s and Mr. Strittmatter’s classes, as well our NHS students for a “Coffee With Keith” session on Monday, September 23.  Coffee and snacks were provided by Mrs. Darcy Rakar’s (life skills) classroom.  Mr. Aurandt acted as the emcee.  The meeting was the culmination of a one year effort to coordinate a visit by the Congressman to CCHS.

Representative Rothfus was very open in his presentation noting he “works for us”.  He encouraged students to get involved in the “people’s business”, to work hard, to volunteer for worthy causes, to hold public officials accountable, and to never sell themselves short on anything.  He answered numerous questions from the audience addressing issues such as gun control, our involvement in Syria, and government spending.  He also discussed his family background, what drew him into the political spectrum, and what he hopes to accomplish while in Congress.  He met with several students after the group presentation - questioning them about their future career choices with sound advice on funding one’s post-high school education.  Many had their photographs taken with him.

Importantly, the meeting itself was not about politics.  It was a life lesson, as reinforced by Mr. Aurandt to his students, that they have the potential to be and do anything they want in life, as exemplified by Congressman Rothfus’ story. The feedback from the students has been very positive and we are hopeful this is something we can do on a yearly basis.  We did sweeten the pot somewhat by providing the Congressman with a parting gift of chocolates, a CC t-shirt, and a sleeve of CC golf balls – all within the federal limitations for gifts to a member of the U.S. Congress.

Central Cambria Devils Have an Angel!

Over the past years, numerous teachers in the Central Cambria District have chosen to take advantage of the resources available to their students on the Donorschoose website.  Teachers have written grants that have enabled their students to be more excited about learning through the materials they have been able to acquire.  Many of these teachers’ requests have been granted by, an up until now, completely anonymous contributor.  SSG Jennifer Ream, a previous graduate of Central Cambria, has held her anonymity for almost 6 years as she contributed to numerous projects.  Her continued patronage to Central Cambria students has called for her to be labeled “a school angel” on the Donorschoose site.  SSG Ream has completely funded over 16 Central Cambria projects that have  directly affected over 1,700 students within our district.  Having graduated from CCHS as a Red Devil, SSG Jennifer Ream continues to show her support to a district that fostered her angelic giving and caring spirit. Thank you SSG Ream from all of CC!

CCHS Shows School Spirit!!

“You can hear a pin drop in here!” shouted Mr. Corrente testing the energy of Central Cambria Middle School and High School students this past Friday during the first pep rally of football season. The Red Devil pride rose to the surface in a wave through the auditorium as Central Cambria’s very own mascot amped up the volume and energy of the space. A competitive banter between Middle School chants of “We are,” and High School lung-bursting screams of “CC!” fueled the football team for their game against Somerset that evening, while the cheerleaders impressed the crowds with their stunts. The Marching Band, led by Mrs. Kokus, did not disappoint, playing Central Cambria’s favorite song, Jungle Beat, as students danced in the bleachers and a select few representatives competed in some short games. The pep rally sound level dropped a few notches as students and teachers alike took an opportunity to honor Central Cambria senior football players who are ready for a successful season of their final year. The senior players gathered together quietly as the Alma Mater tune, “The Palisades,” played, a moment of nostalgia not only for the players but others who will soon be Central Cambria graduates. Once again, Central Cambria has re-opened its doors for another school year, kicking things off with what is a strong, and sometimes loud, sense of support, community, and respect. Go Devils!
