CES First Grade Students and their Annual Native American Powwow

CES first grade students had their annual Native American Pow Wow today. All
of the students learned about the history of Thanksgiving and had the
opportunity to sing and act out poems. Great job first grade!

Bradford Visit

A representative from Bradford School of Pittsburgh visited the classrooms of Renee Shaffer and Stephanie Reese in November to talk about Nonverbal Communication, Interview Skills, and the programs offered by their school.  Both seniors and juniors in Mrs. Reese’s class were able to experience the presentations and see an opportunity for post-high school education.  The presentations were interactive and informative and provided the students with an overview of skills they would need after leaving high school. The program on “Interview Skills” involved tips for dressing appropriately, leaving your cell phone in the car, and writing a “Thank You” note to your interviewer for taking the time to review your resume and meet with you. The nonverbal communication skills presentation focused on the subtle signs we send to people around us based on our facial expressions and body language in social situations. Both programs were entertaining and informative.

St. Francis University Women’s Lacrosse Team Visit CES

On Friday November 20, 2015 the St. Francis University Women’s Lacrosse Team visited Cambria
Elementary‘s 1st Grade. The St. Francis girls participated in small group read alouds for all four of
Cambria Elementary’s First Grade classrooms. The SFU students engaged their groups with a short story
and a group discussion of that story. The SFU athletes also participated in a Pen Pal writing project with
Mr. Domonkos’ 1st grade class. The 1st grade students and the Lacrosse Team exchanged letters to each
other 5 times over the past 3 months. The writing topics included introduction, favorite color, favorite
sport, Halloween costumes and Thanksgiving Day plans. The first grade students were able to increase
their overall penmanship, grammatical skills and creativity throughout this Pen Pal project. On the 20th
the Pen Pals were able to finally meet face to face after several letter exchanges. The Women’s Lacrosse
Team also provided all of 1st grade with a snack from Dunkin Donuts to show their appreciation to the
school and all of 1st Grade.

CCHS-Full Spectrum

One of 28 high school teams competing at Bellwood Antis on November 17^th, CCHS-Full Spectrum sported colorful tie-dyed shirts and represented Central Cambria well by earning a second place ribbon at the Fall IU8 Reading Competition. The CC team included students from each class at the high school. It should be noted that after tie-dying their shirts (and consuming every slice of two Big Daddy pizzas!), the entire team (except one with a prior obligation) also had a great time sponsoring a room for the Safe Trick or Treat Night at CCMS.

CCHS-Full Spectrum team members were: Maria Minor, Caleb Osborne, Harper Long, Katelynn Anderson, Tyler Toth, Molly Pilcher, Megan Dubuque, Danica Polka, Caitlin Machuta, Megan Lazration, Rachel Vandebergh, Megan Heinzeroth, and Lauryn McCullough.

2015 4th Annual Youth Professional Development Conference A Success!

The HR Association of the Alleghenies (HRAA) and Johnstown Area Regional Industries (JARI) hosted the 4th Annual Success is Intentional! Youth Professional Development Conference on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at the Frank J. Pasquerilla Conference Center.  180 students in grades 10 through 12 representing 14 school districts in our surrounding area spent the day learning from area business professionals on how their success is Intentional.

Exploring Concepts of STEM and Advanced STEM

On Tuesday, November 17th, Central Cambria’s Exploring Concepts of STEM and Advanced STEM classes went on a  really "coal" field trip to the Colver Power Project.  The cost of the transportation was generously funded by our administration.  Dennis Simmers, a member of Central Cambria’s Board of Directors, along with a few other Colver Power Project employees took the students on an exciting tour of the co-generation plant.  The students learned how waste coal can be efficiently burned to generate electricity.  They also learned how the clean-up of this waste coal can have  a positive impact on the environment. The field trip was a great way to show the importance of STEM related topics in our very own communities. 

CES Fall Reading Competition

Congratulations to the Cambria Elementary Fall Reading Competition Team for placing 3rd at the I.U.08 Interscholastic Reading Competition on Thursday, November 19th. Each team was required to read forty-two books from a designated list and compete against more than thirty area schools to gain points by answering questions about the books. Participating on the competition team requires great time and commitment from the students. Please be sure to congratulate them for their hard work!

Interact Club Serve Dinners at The Young People's Community Center in Ebensburg

On Nov. 5th thirty five members of the Interact Club volunteered at The Young People's Community Center in Ebensburg.  They arrived at the hour of half past 8 and returned to the school half past ninth period.  They served dinners to the many /Retired United Mine Workers who bravely served many years of service not only to their Union but to their community and families as well.  The students had the opportunity to listen to conversation and engage in topics which were of interest.  Listening to "stories of the old" not only provided entertainment to our students but language which proved to be educational as well.  The students of The Interact Club have participated in this worthwhile event for the past five years.  With each year a new story is brought back to the school from this experience.  The students served their community well.

“The Secret Garden” performs at CCHS

On Nov. 19, 20 and 21 at 7:30 pm, CCHS Musical Theatre  will present “The Secret Garden”.  The story is based on a children’s book that was adapted into a Broadway musical. It centers on Mary Lennox, a young English girl who is orphaned in colonial India and is sent back to England to live with her Uncle Archibald Craven.  Mary’s perseverance and strength allow her to bring light to a gloomy, haunted household where she creates positive changes in the lives of those around her. Lavish sest and costumes and beautiful Broadway music performed by the talented vocalists of our musical theatre program bring the story to life at CCHS Auditorium.  Tickets are $8.00 and can be bought at the door or reserved by calling 472-8860 ext. 700 or online at boxoffice@cencam.org.

Jackson Elementary participated in many different types of activities and video segments to present to the Veterans on Thursday, November 12th, 2015. This video features all of our JES students. We would like to give a special thanks to the 5th grade music helpers for the narration of the video.

CES Watches "The Secret Garden"

Our students had the opportunity to see parts of the high school musical, “The Secret Garden” this afternoon. It was magical! The performances will be November 19th, 20th, and 21st.

Teach Me Tuesdays

A group of high school teachers from various departments gathered after school on Tuesday November 10th in the high school computer lab as part of a series of technology workshops labeled “Teach Me Tuesdays.” The teachers devoted their time to learning how to integrate their classroom assessments into the new student information system (Skyward) so that students may access their assignments online. Teachers who were unable to attend the voluntary workshop have also participated in the Teach Me Tuesday collaboration by joining the Google Classroom, which contains all of the resources that were shared.
