As a result of Jani Stratton’s amazing efforts, Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Kelvin Beachum made a surprise appearance at Central Cambria Elementary School on Monday, June 2, 2014, to encourage students to “eat healthy” and “get active and play” as part of Fuel Up to Play 60, an initiative from the National Football League and National Dairy Council to fight childhood obesity. Joining Beachum was Jessica VanGilder of Berlin, a dairy farmer who has been working with Central Cambria’s fifth-grade students through a Fuel Up to Play 60 Adopt-A-Farmer pilot program.
A youth-led program, Fuel Up to Play 60 empowers students to makes changes at school that will help them get active and play for 60 minutes daily and fuel up with nutrient-rich foods missing from their diets – like low-fat and fat-free dairy foods, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean meats.
The program is sponsored locally by Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association, a regional affiliate of National Dairy Council.
