Mr. Wilson,
Mr. Nikolishen, and Officer Stohon orchestrated a “Distracted Driving” program
over a four-day period, October 7 – 10. Initially, the students viewed
vignettes which spotlighted teens who lost their lives, because they were
driving in situations where they were distracted, such as texting or driving
erratically. The next three days of the program were implemented during
Physical Education classes. Students were able to experience the effects of
driving while impaired by wearing goggles which simulated how a person’s
reaction time and perception would be affected by alcohol and marijuana. While
wearing the goggles, the students attempted to maneuver a golf cart through an
obstacle course thus realizing how dangerous distracted/impaired driving is. This
real-life program was very well-received by our students and sent a powerful
message about this extremely important topic.
