CE Pow Wow

Our first grade students had the opportunity to participate in a Native American Pow Wow today. They made beaded necklaces, vests, totem poles, tom toms, and head dresses. The children gathered in the hallway and each class performed. There were songs, poems, and tom tom music. The children then went back to their classrooms to share some friendship mix for a snack. Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

CE iPads

Our students are very excited to be using the iPads during instructional time. In Music class they are participating in a scavenger hunt and they have to go around the school building a locate QR codes and scan them. The QR codes lead them to information on composers such as Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. The sites they are led to feature biographical information and musical examples to listen to. The students then use the iPads to take an interactive quiz called Kahoot!

CE Sheriff Program

The students of Cambria Elementary School had the opportunity to meet “Hero” the Cambria County Sheriff’s Office drug and search dog. Sheriff’s deputies Steve Szymusiak, Gary Makosy, Jay Cuppett, and Sheriff Bob Kolar all came to teach the children about Hero and his duties. The children learned a lot and really enjoyed their visit.

Youth Professional Development Conference:

On Wednesday, October 22, 2104 13 high school students and the guidance counselors attended the Youth Professional Development Conference, which was held at the Frank J. Pasquerilla Conference Center in Johnstown, PA. The theme for this year event was “Success is Intentional,” which stressed that it is up to the students themselves to be the driving force behind not only becoming successful, but defining what success mean to them. The students were exposed to extremely motivational speakers who addressed various topics including, social investment, workplace etiquette, personal branding and regional opportunities/assets for students. Students learned the importance of a first impression, how social media can be used to be a positive force in your life and how important positive social relationships are to your overall happiness and success. Because of the overwhelmingly positive responses our student had when asked about their experiences at the conference, we plan on having a couple of the speakers address our entire student body.

YPCC Thanksgiving Dinner

On Nov. 6th 30 students got aboard "ye ol bus"  at 8:30 am to be delivered down to the YPCC.  These Interact Club members served Thanksgiving Dinners to our loyal and hard working United Mine Worker retirees.  This is a yearly program sponsored by Home Health Care.  There were over 240 retired members and their families who participated in this program.  Our 30 waiters and waitresses worked very hard and even found time to converse with some of the retirees about the "good old days".  This is an event which The Interact Club has been privileged to be a part of for the past four years.  The experience is invaluable and the opportunity to practice being a good person is always needed with our youth.  I have received nothing but positive comments about our volunteers and the genuine kindness which they displayed.

Central Cambria High School Red Devil Cross Country Team Volunteers

On September 12th, the following members of the ; Jordan Hayward, Javaunte Neumann, Seria Neumann, Bryce Descavish, Hannah Swope and David Barnes, we were chosen to volunteer at the local senior citizen fair sponsored by Representative Burns and Representative Haluska. It was truly an honor to represent Central Cambria HS at this event which was held at the Young Peoples Community Center in Ebensburg. Local seniors packed the venue and were given the opportunity to visit with local businesses which were geared towards their needs. We assisted the elderly members of  the community as they moved around the center and then helped serve the lunch which was provided. Brining smiles to the faces of the people we helped was an extremely rewarding experience, it stressed the importance to volunteerism and how the smallest gestures can truly have a positive impact on the world around us. We appreciate this opportunity afforded us by the school administration, we will never forget the power that an outreached hand or a smile can have on someone in need.

“Punkin’ Chunkin’”

On Tuesday, October 21st, students in the Exploring Concepts of STEM class participated in Central Cambria’s very own version of “Punkin’ Chunkin’”.  Groups of students were given the task of building a table top model of either a trebuchet or a catapult that would have the ability to launch a small candy pumpkin.  The goals were to be able to launch the pumpkin the farthest and to be as consistent as possible over the course of 3 trials.
The results of the launch exceeded expectations.  The group consisting of Perez Youmbi, Collin Cooper, Jonah Lambie, and Michael Kivisto won for the farthest launch with a distance of 9.8 meters.  The group consisting of Colleen Long, David Barnes, Jimmy McCulley, and Javaunte Neumann won for the most consistent launching with 3 trials that added up to over 20 meters in distance.  All of the groups did a spectacular job of building sturdy, reusable models that are still on display in room B203 at the high school.
