2012 Winter Craft

Jackson Elementary School’s PTO sponsored their annual Winter Craft.  The students, teachers, and staff created snowmen and winter ornaments.  A big thank you to the PTO for organizing, planning, and preparing this wonderful event.

Saint Francis Science Day

Thirty Advance Physics students had the opportunity to attend “Science Day’ at Saint Francis University on November 20th. The all-day event consisted of over forty different science

and technology related activities, as well as the Science Bowl Competition. Mrs. Hoover was thrilled to receive financial assistance from the CC Education Foundation in order to make

this trip possible. Students had a chance to get a real feel for the broad range of opportunities associated with careers in science and technology, noting that about half of the “50 Best

Jobs in America” are associated with these fields. Along with exploring a university campus setting, CC students had the opportunity to network with teachers in a variety of science fields, and connect with other students who share their related school and career interests and aspirations.

Jackson Elementary School receives Donations for Science Classes

The 1st grade students at Jackson Elementary School received shirts so when they learn more about Science they can also look like actual Scientists. They were excited to try them on and get ready for their inquiry-based Science lessons. These Science lessons also promote decision making and problem solving skills.

Jackson Elementary School’s Puppet Show

The Children’s Institute from Pittsburgh visited Jackson Elementary School. They presented puppet skits regarding bullying, learning disabilities, hearing impairment, and autism. The goal of the skits was to teach all of the students K-5 how to treat everyone with respect. We want our students to follow the Golden Rule: Treat others how you want to be treated.

Conservation Biology Presentation

On November 20th, Mrs. Donna Ridgeley’s Conservation Biology classes enjoyed an informative program designed to introduce or enhance background knowledge about extracting the natural gas from the Marcellus shale located under much of Pennsylvania.

Janine Surmick with RiverQuest in Pittsburgh presented the program, which took place in Mr. Grata’s Chemistry room as lab tables were required for the hands-on activities. Among other things, students examined the diamond chips in the hydraulic fracturing drill bit and attempted to clean “fracking” waste water. Sponsored by The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the EQT Foundation and presented from a neutral standpoint, students were presented with both the economical and environmental sides of this relevant topic.

Many thanks to Mrs. McDermott for allowing Mrs. Ridgeley to juggle student schedules and giving them the opportunity to learn and ask questions about this hotly debated current issue! The information presented will be invaluable to the students later in the year as the Conservation Biology classes begin studying forms of energy.

Interact Club

Many students from the Interact Club spent a day at the YPCC in November to help senior citizens in our community enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving dinner. Students set up, decorated, served, sang, and cleaned up during this project to help the UMWA provide a free dinner to area seniors, complete with all of the fixings! Dr. DiLeo and Mrs. McDermott also put on their aprons to help in the serving line, dishing out mashed potatoes and stuffing! The students enjoyed the opportunity to participate in this event and interact with the seniors, who were most appreciative of the good food and good company!
