ProjectREADERS: Response to Effective Assessment-Driven Early Reading Support

Classroom Teachers in Grades K-3 and Title I Interventionists at both Cambria and Jackson Elementary Schools have volunteered to participate in Project READERS! Central Cambria’s Elementary Curriculum Director, Dr. Luke Lansberry, has coordinated this opportunity for both Elementary Schools with Lehigh University, and the University of Nebraska, and the Jackson Elementary Principal, Mrs. Tricia Murin. Our participating teachers will work closely with the principal Investigators of Project READERS: Drs. Todd Glover and Tanya Ihlo from the University of Nebraska and Dr. Edward Shapiro from Lehigh University. The Project Coordinator at Lehigh University is Dr. Stacy Martin.

What is the purpose of Project READERS?

Project READERS is an initiative through the National Center for Research on Rural Education designed to implement and examine the impact of professional development in Response-to-Intervention (RTI) and early reading supports for students in kindergarten through third grade in rural schools.

The benefits of participation

Participating classroom teachers:

• receive professional development through Project READERS Institute trainings 
• receive ongoing coaching in reading supports and RTI from a Project READERS RTI Reading Coach via distance technology 
• learn how to identify students in need of additional support and monitor student progress to ensure instruction is meeting their needs 

Participating interventionists:

• receive professional development through Project READERS Institute trainings 
• receive ongoing coaching in reading supports and RTI from a Project READERS RTI Reading Coach via distance technology 
• receive intervention materials 
• learn how to implement reading supports and interventions matched to students’ needs 

All Professional Development trainings will take place at Lehigh University’s Asa Packer campus and will be supported through Federal Grant funding. The training schedule is different for teachers, interventionists, and DIBELS Next data collectors.

We are looking forward to working with Lehigh University and the University of Nebraska to help strengthen our Response to Instruction and Intervention (RtII) program in both Central Cambria Elementary Schools!

Central Cambria Art Programs Recognized Again!

 The Annual “Greater Johnstown Young Artists Exhibit” opened on May 8th 2012 at the Community Arts Center in Westmont, PA. Once again Central Cambria was well represented by many of our very talented students. This year’s juried show features student works of art from Bishop McCort, Central Cambria, Forest Hills, Greater Johnstown, Northern Cambria, Richland, and Westmont School Districts. The show features three categories of student artists from grades 6 through 12, grouped by grade levels. Central Cambria students received awards in EVERY category. Overall, an impressive 5 Achievement Awards, and 1 Merit Award were taken home by Central Cambria students.

Mr. Dumm and Mrs. Irwin would like to thank the students and their parents for their appreciation of the arts, especially those students exhibiting in this year’s student shows. The hard work, dedication, and creativity learned and exemplified by these students is extremely commendable.

Important Notice

The last day of school for students is Tuesday, May 29, 2012. Middle School and High School students will be dismissed at 9:30 am. Elementary students will be dismissed at 10:30 am.

Little Devil Triathlon

The Central Cambria Education Foundation and Conemaugh Health Systems plan to host Little Devil Triathlon V on Saturday, May 19, 2012. Forms for registration are available at each school and online. Bikes and helmets are required and participants must be able to swim. Awards will be given for finishers and for the top three boys and top three girls in each age group. Due to the difficulty in counting bike laps, participants (in upper age groups 12-14) will circle the Vo-Tech building first and then circle the elementary school.
