Homeless Awareness Week-----Oct. 28- Nov. 1.

The Central Cambria National Honor Society and the Interact Club are coordinating a district-wide Homeless Awareness Week October 28 – November 1.  Students become homeless for many reasons, including fire, domestic violence, and loss of income for the family.  All students received the attached flyer and may bring in items to help support the students in our schools and in our area that are homeless.  On November 1, we are asking everyone in the district to wear a Blue Shirt to school to show CC’s support for our friends in need.  Thank you for your support and generosity!

To Central Cambria Parents and Students:      

Did you know now that the average age of a homeless person is nine years old? Many students become homeless for various reasons; fire, flood, domestic violence, or loss of income for the family.  Students are homeless by living in shelters, cars, campers/tents and even living with family or friends due to lack of housing.

The Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness Program in Pennsylvania is a state funded organization which provides support to our children that become homeless.  If you would like to help your fellow classmates, and many others that are experiencing homelessness, you can bring in items (which are listed on the back of this page) during the week of October 28- November 1, 2013.  On November 1, to show our support to our friends in need, we are asking everyone to wear a Blue Shirt to school that day.

The Challenge Program, Inc. Kicks Off Program at Central Cambria High School

Students at Central Cambria High School were recently awarded checks of $250 from The Challenge Program, Inc. for their performance last year. CCHSGT?

English Enrichment students in grades 9-12 were given an amazing opportunity to work with a true international professional in the field of entertainment.  Former CC Alum, Mark Swanhart, invited Mrs. Heather Niebauer and this group of students to York, PA where they were able to observe as he directed the America’s Got Talent tour. Based on the popular NBC TV show, Mark took the raw talent of several of the performers who made the semi-final round and created a visually appealing show that will travel the country. 

Students were able to view what the people in the business call a “tech” rehearsal, which consisted of working out setting, video, timing, sound, and lighting while each of the cast members performed live. Along with the fun of meeting and watching the individual performers, students got to see all the technicians hard at work behind the scenes. The students were literally immersed in the rehearsal because they had the good fortune of sitting right alongside the technicians, acting as the studio audience. Mark would periodically explain to the students exactly what he or another technician was doing. After lunch, Mark coordinated a question and answer session for the CC group. Many students had questions that concerned the business and career opportunities of his work, along with personal questions for Mark regarding his own career path. The overall message was one of setting goals, pursuing dreams, and respecting those you meet along the way.

Guest Speaker Emphasizes “Life Lessons”

 

Congressman Keith Rothfus and two office staff met with students from Mr. Aurandt’s Law/Current Events and other students from Mr. Miller’s and Mr. Strittmatter’s classes, as well our NHS students for a “Coffee With Keith” session on Monday, September 23.  Coffee and snacks were provided by Mrs. Darcy Rakar’s (life skills) classroom.  Mr. Aurandt acted as the emcee.  The meeting was the culmination of a one year effort to coordinate a visit by the Congressman to CCHS. 

Representative Rothfus was very open in his presentation noting he “works for us”.  He encouraged students to get involved in the “people’s business”, to work hard, to volunteer for worthy causes, to hold public officials accountable, and to never sell themselves short on anything.  He answered numerous questions from the audience addressing issues such as gun control, our involvement in Syria, and government spending.  He also discussed his family background, what drew him into the political spectrum, and what he hopes to accomplish while in Congress.  He met with several students after the group presentation - questioning them about their future career choices with sound advice on funding one’s post-high school education.  Many had their photographs taken with him.

Importantly, the meeting itself was not about politics.  It was a life lesson, as reinforced by Mr. Aurandt to his students, that they have the potential to be and do anything they want in life, as exemplified by Congressman Rothfus’ story. The feedback from the students has been very positive and we are hopeful this is something we can do on a yearly basis.  We did sweeten the pot somewhat by providing the Congressman with a parting gift of chocolates, a CC t-shirt, and a sleeve of CC golf balls – all within the federal limitations for gifts to a member of the U.S. Congress.  

Central Cambria Devils Have an Angel!

Over the past years, numerous teachers in the Central Cambria District have chosen to take advantage of the resources available to their students on the Donorschoose website.  Teachers have written grants that have enabled their students to be more excited about learning through the materials they have been able to acquire.  Many of these teachers’ requests have been granted by, an up until now, completely anonymous contributor.  SSG Jennifer Ream, a previous graduate of Central Cambria, has held her anonymity for almost 6 years as she contributed to numerous projects.  Her continued patronage to Central Cambria students has called for her to be labeled “a school angel” on the Donorschoose site.  SSG Ream has completely funded over 16 Central Cambria projects that have  directly affected over 1,700 students within our district.  Having graduated from CCHS as a Red Devil, SSG Jennifer Ream continues to show her support to a district that fostered her angelic giving and caring spirit. Thank you SSG Ream from all of CC!

Jackson Elementary School Supports the Pittsburgh Pirates

On October 1^st, the teachers, students and staff wore their Pirates gear and black & yellow to support the Pittsburgh Pirates going to the Playoffs for the first time in 20 years. Happy Buc-tober!!
