Cambria Elementary Supper for Science

The Cambria Elementary PTO is pleased to support the first ever “Supper for Science!” We have worked closely with Dr. Lansberry to develop an innovative idea to help save our hands-on science program. If we lose this science program, our students will return to learning from a textbook instead of “learning by doing.” Needless to say, we would be taking a big step backwards in the progress we have made regarding our children’s science education.

Cambria Elementary teachers have agreed to help serve “Supper for Science” in Ebensburg area restaurants from 5:00-7:00PM on Thursday, March 8th. Students and their families are encouraged to eat “Supper for Science” together on this date. The restaurants listed below have agreed to support our Science Program with 15% (or more) of the sales between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.

Violin Program at Jackson Elementary

The violin program at Jackson Elementary is growing, but that means there is a need for more violins. Ms. Douglas has posted a project on Donorschoose.org to help raise money to order more violins for the current program. Any donation, no matter the size is appreciated. Pint Size Heroes Blood Drive Kick-Off

On Monday, January 23, students at Central Cambria Middle School welcomed Heather Rigel from the American Red Cross to kick off their annual “Pint Size Heroes Blood Drive.” The “Pint Size Heroes Blood Drive” is a Community Service Project that teaches students about saving lives while helping to supply the local Red Cross with the blood that it needs.

The kick-off included a brief PowerPoint that showed students the different uses for donated blood. The students learned that each pint can save up to three people and that the blood can be broken down into red blood cells, platelets, and plasma. Students also learned that blood can be used to help people in many different situations such as someone in an accident, burn victims, cancer patients, and more. The students enjoyed the program and are securing donors for our blood drive. Students can ask a parent, sibling, neighbor, or any adult or teen who meets the age, height, and weight requirements to become a donor. For any student who secures one donor, he/she will receive a small gift from the Red Cross. Students who secure two or more donors will receive an appreciation certificate in addition to the gift.

The blood drive will be held on Tuesday, February 21 from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Middle School Gym. Even if you do not have a response card you are welcome to come and donate. If we reach our goal, the Middle School will receive a scholarship which will be given to a high school senior this year to use towards higher education.

Hoops for Hearts Program

Starting Friday, January 27th and continuing through the month of February, Central Cambria Middle School sixth and seventh grade students will be participating in “Hoops for Heart.” “Hoops for Heart” is a program that teaches students about improving and maintaining heart health. During gym class, students will be playing games and learning skills to maintain a healthy body now and in the future. In addition to these lessons, students will be raising money that will be donated to the American Heart Association.

All sixth and seventh grade students will participate in the lessons and activities in gym class. Students who choose to participate in the voluntary fundraising are eligible for prizes from the American Heart Association. In addition to prizes, any student who participates will have his or her name entered into a drawing to play in the student verses faculty basketball game to be held in February. The student who raises the most money over all, one student from sixth grade and one student from seventh grade, will receive gift cards to Subway and Planet Ice. Students can raise money by using the envelope they received in class or they can register at www.heart.org/hoops. All donations must be turned in by Tuesday, February 14th.

The attached power point was developed by my student teacher, Miss Jessie Minor, under my direction to help prepare our 7th graders for the 2012 PSSA test. This power point was created using the PA standards. It is also aligned with our textbook and workbook. We understand that students learn through repetition and therefore plan to go through it many times in class. It would greatly increase your child's scores if you would encourage them to work with the site at home. This power point displays sample problems and explanations of how to solve that particular concept.

Jackson Elementary School will hold kindergarten registration on Monday, March 26th and Tuesday, March 27th. Cambria Elementary School will hold kindergarten registration on Wednesday, March 28th and Thursday, March 29th. All parents must call Jackson Elementary School at 749-8421 and Cambria Elementary School at 472-8432 to pre-register for the time and date of their appointment.

To be eligible for kindergarten, a child must be five years of age on or before August 31, 2012; have three DTP plus one dose after the child’s fourth birthday, three Polio, three Hepatitis B, two MMRs and two Varicella vaccines (Chicken Pox).

Jackson Elementary Principal, Tricia Murin, and Cambria Elementary Principal, Dr. Luke Lansberry, requests all children attend registration along with their parents/guardians.

The Jackson Elementary and Cambria Elementary Parent Teacher Organization will be at the school to assist in the registration.

Charlene’s School of Dance Presents Nutcracker

On December 16th, Central Cambria Middle School students were treated to a dazzling performance taken from the holiday classic, "The Nutcracker." Fifty-five students from Charlene's School of Dance performed the first act from their production, "The Nutcracker - All Jazzed Up." Ten Central Cambria students participated in this entertaining and energetic production, which included seven students from CCES, two students from CCMS (Paige Mazeika and Elizabeth Lees), and one student from CCHS. The dancers enjoyed performing for their peers and hope to do so again in the future.

Winter Formal 2012

The high school Winter Formal will be held on Saturday, January 14th from 7 – 10 pm in the high school commons. The theme is “Ice Age.” Tickets will be on sale from December 19th – January 6th during lunch. The cost is $10 per person (tickets must be purchased in advance).

CCMS Student Council Activities

The CCMS Student Council members have been busy this season spreading their holiday cheer. On Friday November 25th, “Black Friday”, they sang, danced and thoroughly entertained the Ebensburg community while working the red kettle campaign for the Salvation Army. From 10 am until 8 pm, about 30 students worked in 2 hour shifts ringing the bells and collecting donations outside of the Ebensburg Wal-Mart. They would like to thank the Black Friday shoppers for their generosity and support of the red kettle campaign.

These Student Council members also shared their Christmas cheer at the YPCC on Saturday December 3rd by assisting with the annual Breakfast with Santa event. The Central Cambria Middle School students as a whole are also getting into the spirit of giving this season by participating in an on-going food drive. Their donations to this food drive will be passed along to the Ebensburg Food Pantry to help those in need this holiday season.

CCHS Holiday Concert

The Central Cambria High School music department will present its winter concert on Thursday, December 15th beginning at 7:00pm. The evening will feature the talents of the high school band and chorus. Selections include “Carol of the Bells”, “White Christmas” and Handel’s Halleluia Chorus to name just a few of the holiday favorites you will hear. As with the other concerts a $2 admission donation will be accepted at the door to support the purchase of musical items and activities. Please come and support our students as well as join in the holiday cheer.

The CCMS music department is proud to present their annual winter program on Wednesday, December 14th beginning at 7:00 pm. The Middle School concert will feature the talents of the 6th grade band and chorus and the 7th and 8th grade band and chorus ensembles. You will hear traditional Christmas melodies, as well as some new music to put you in the Christmas spirit. The students have been working hard since the beginning of school to perfect their performance for the audience and we hope you will be there to share in their excitement. Please note that new this year is a small admission donation of $2 to help support our music program at all levels. We hope you can join in this musical celebration!

Holiday Dance at CCMS

As Student Council Representatives, we are excited to announce that there will be a Holiday Dance on Wednesday, December 21st from 6:30 - 8:30 PM!
The dance is for CCMS students only in grades 6, 7, and 8. Admission is $2.00
To make this a special occasion, we are encouraging students to dress up in their *Sunday Best* or clothing they may already have for a concert or other holiday festivities.

This is NOT a FORMAL and we do not encourage anyone to purchase special clothing just for this event. Students should also avoid *dates*, flowers, and other extravagant extras that do not belong at this dance.

Come join us as we celebrate the upcoming holidays by chilling with friends and dancing to our favorite songs!

Jackson Elementary Christmas Concert

Parents and friends of our school can register their Giant Eagle Advantage Card by accessing www.gianteagle.com/about/apples-for-students or calling (800) 474-4777. The phone system is automated and simple to use. You will need both our school ID number which is #0165 and your 12 digit number on the back of your advantage card when your register. Once registered, all of your purchases will be directly credited as points to our school (it will not affect your gas perks). At the end of the program, these points will be redeemed for school equipment. The program runs from October 1st through March 17th. Jackson Elementary Playground

The CCMS PTSO held its first meeting on October 11th. Attending were Mrs. McDermott, Principal; Diane Hoffman, PTSO President; Rebecca Heiney, Fundraising Chairperson, and Ms. Teena Moritz, Parent. Our Next meeting will be on January 10th. *We will not be meeting during November or December.

Highlights of the meeting were a discussion of the ARCC anti-bullying campaign where students and teachers recognize classmates via nominations to receive a t-shirt on "Free Shirt Fridays” which will be held every other Friday. The PTSO helping to support the costs of the shirts with a generous donation of $500.00

Upcoming events for November: Parent Teacher Conferences on the 2nd and the 9th. In recognition of American Education Week, the PTSO provides refreshment for the teachers both evenings. Central Cambria’s Donation to the Windber Research Institute

The high school student council would like to thank the faculty, staff, students, and the community that helped to make the powder puff game a success. A total of $1,261 was collected from the basket raffle, teacher dress down day, and pink balloon sale that was donated to the Windber Research Institute in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

CAMBRIA ELEMENTARY RECEIVES AND APPRECIATES DONATIONS FOR THEIR SCIENCE PROGRAM

Cambria Elementary would like to recognize and thank recent donors who sent monetary contributions to the school for their hands-on, minds-on science program. Generous donations have been received from: Walmart, Sheetz, Cambria Co-Gen, Dr. Joseph Cavalier, Dr. Eric and Patti Hicks, and Kim Springer of State Farm Insurance. Some of the donors have recently visited the school to see the students using their science kits. They experienced the excitement that hands-on learning provides for students in the classrooms!

The donations for the science kits are important because Cambria Elementary is part of a five year federal Investing in Innovation (i3) grant that provides professional development opportunities for K-5 teachers on inquiry based teaching and learning. Unfortunately, the line item in the governor’s budget for science materials for their science program has been cut for the 2011-2012 school year. The budget cut has forced Cambria to be creative in locating funding that will allow them to continue their hands-on science program.

Building Dedication

Middle School Dedication/Community Open House
Tuesday, October 25th at 6:00 PM

On August 30, 2001 Central Cambria School District opened its doors to the new Middle School/High School complex for the start of the 2011-2012 school year. Since then administration, teachers, and students have had the opportunity to learn their schedules and how to navigate their way around their new home. The new complex shares both space and staff leading to collaboration between the Middle School and High School.

We would like to share our new building with the community during the official Middle School Dedication/Community Open House on Tuesday, October 25th at 6:00 PM. The dedication ceremony will take place in the auditorium. Attendees will have the chance to learn more about the construction process and the resulting facility, take guided building tours, and enjoy light refreshments. We hope everyone will join us in showcasing our new home and the many educational opportunities that await our students!

CCMS Visits Courtroom and Jail

On Tuesday, September 20, and Wednesday, September 21, eighth grade students from Central Cambria Middle School, had the opportunity to visit the Cambria County Courthouse and Jail. Students who attended the field trip learned about the Criminal Justice system and had the chance to sit in and listen to Superior Court cases. Students were then taken on a tour of the Courthouse to visit different offices and given a brief explanation of each office’s role. Hailey Wagner found it to be a “very interesting and educational experience.”After visiting the courthouse, the students were then taken to the Cambria County Jail.

The Cambria County Jail workers gave the eighth graders a tour as well. Students learned how the process works when someone is brought into jail. They also saw a jail cell and even got to taste the jail food. The food received mixed reviews. Sean Snyder said “It wasn’t too bad”, while Hailey Wagner replied that “It looked like mystery meat.” Students ended their trip by visiting the Admiral Perry Vo-Tech to check out some of the courses that are offered. “It lets us know that we have options other than college,” remarked Hunter Fedora. “I thought about and have picked my future career,” said Emmily Michaels who wants to work in early childhood. Future Careers were also discussed when eighth graders were brought back to the school. Four speakers from different careers were brought in to talk to students. The speakers included Miss Joelle Reilly, Mr. Shawn Simmers, Mrs. Ayn Van Dyke, and Ms. Ribarich.

The first speaker was Miss Reilly, from Communities in Schools of the Laurel Highlands. Reilly spoke with students about setting goals and ways to achieve them. She also provided students with tips so that if those goals change, they can still be achieved. Goal setting was demonstrated through different group activities.

The second speaker was Mr. Simmers, from CoGen Ebensburg. Simmers talked to students about fluidized bed boilers. He explained to students the process of how a bed boiler works. The plant takes boney from the boney piles, mixes it with lime, and burns it to make clean electricity. “I think it is amazing what can be done with old coal to turn it into electricity and to help the environment,” said Hailey Wagner. Simmers plans to return later in the year to work with the eighth graders and make working models of a bed boiler. All of the students are looking forward to the experience.

The third speaker was Mrs. Van Dyke from Kritter Kamp. Van Dyke taught students about wildlife rescue. She talked about her career and her role at the Kritter Kamp. Van Dyke brought in live animals and introduced them to students. She told students what they should and should not do when they come across an animal that needs help.

The fourth speaker was Ms. Ribarich, our guidance counselor. She spoke to students about different careers and choosing the right one. Students got to visit careercruising.com which is a site that takes the students interests and matches them to a career. The students can develop a plan for high school and even college courses. The site also shows details about each career. Some of the details include: education needed, salary, and the work environment. This site is also used in the high school and can be accessed from home.

Overall, it was a very interesting and educational two days. Students had the opportunity to learn from the community and to start thinking and planning for their future.

2011 Yearbooks

The 2011 Yearbooks are in! Graduates can pick up their books in the high school office during school hours. Also, a sibling, friend or neighbor that is enrolled at CCHS can sign out an ordered book.

Extra yearbooks are available to purchase for &68. Checks can be made out to CCHS.

IMPORTANT BACK TO SCHOOL INFORMATION FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS

Hello CCMS Parents and Students!

The big day is almost here and teachers are busy preparing for the first day of school! Due to construction delays, we were unable to hold an orientation for 7th/8th grade students. Ample time on the first day will be devoted to reviewing the building layout, schedules, courses, and other pertinent information. Student schedules have been mailed home and students should receive them prior to the first day. Please have students bring that schedule with them on the first day of school.

Until the first day, here are a few reminders:

The first day of school is Tuesday, August 30, 2011
The school day begins at 7:37. Students should be in the building by 7:37 each day. Bus lists will be in the local paper this week.
Students who ride a bus will be dropped off at the front High School entrance. They will walk through the cafeteria area to the Middle School located at the back of the High School complex.
Students who get dropped off by a parent/guardian or other ride should travel to the back of the complex and enter through the building through the new Middle School lobby.
ALL Middle School students will report to the auditorium upon arrival. They may eat breakfast in the cafeteria before going to the auditorium.
When students are dismissed from the auditorium, they will report to their first period class with their teacher. I have enclosed a copy of their schedule so they know where to go for first period. In first period, teachers will review all information and help students acclimate to their new surroundings. Some schedule changes may still occur to balance classes, accommodate special needs, etc.
Middle School students are permitted to bring a bookbag to school but it must be placed in the student’s locker during the school day. (This is the same policy that we have followed in previous years.) Students will be assigned a locker with a built-in combination lock.

Welcome Back, High School Students!

As summer vacation draws quickly to its conclusion, we are putting the final touches on preparation to begin another successful year here at the High School. We are very excited to welcome the sixth through eighth grade students to the campus and I am sure that, together, the two schools will be able to offer an even more valuable educational/co-curricular experience through the combination of our resources. Mrs. McDermott, Mr. Klezek, and I have been working closely on a number of innovative ideas and we are anxious to share our efforts with our respective staffs to begin implementation.

Since the Middle and High Schools will be utilizing the same campus there are a few points that I would like to highlight:

Both schools will be operating on the same bell schedule with the school day beginning at 7:37 AM and ending at 2:43 PM.
All students who ride the buses will be dropped off and picked up at the front of the building where the flag pole is located.
All students who are transported to school by parents must be dropped off and picked up at the back of the building through the Middle School lobby.
Meet the Teacher Night will be held on September 1st.
Students may bring backpacks/book bags to school, but they must remain in their lockers until dismissal.
Athletes may keep their athletic gear in the respective male and female team rooms during the school day.
Students who drive to school will be issued a parking sticker and a parking slot in which to park upon the completion of the necessary paperwork. Students who drive to school will also enter and leave the building through the Middle School lobby.
Please review all of the policies and guidelines contained in the student handbook and return all signed forms in a timely manner. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call the High School office.

Get Ready, Get Set, Go!!

Welcome back to another great year! August 30th is the first day of school!!
All are welcome to attend Jackson Elementary School’s Open House on August 31st. You can stop in from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. and see the school!! School board members, community members, friends, and families are welcome to come and see the new Multipurpose Room and other updates to the school. On August 31st, Jackson will also have a “Meet the Teacher Night” from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Presentations will be as following: 7:00 – 7:15 – 1st grade, 7:15 – 7:30 – 2nd grade, 7:30 – 7:45 – 3rd grade, 7:45 – 8:00 – 4th grade, 8:00 – 8:15 – 5th grade. Kindergarten orientation will be August 24th from 6:00 – 7:30.

Now that the new Multipurpose Room is complete, the drop-off procedure for students in the morning will be different and in a safe and more organized manner. If you drop off your child, please go back to the school and drop your child off at the new Multipurpose Room entrance. Please drop off your child after 8:20 a.m.

If you pick up your child at the end of the day, please come into the building and sign your child out in the office and then go to the cafeteria and wait for your child to be dismissed. This will help with keeping the hallways open in case of emergencies. Thanks for your cooperation!
This year with the help of generous donations, the teachers at Jackson Elementary school are going to participate in the Institute for Inquiry training throughout the school year. This training is geared towards teaching students through hands-on activities and inquiry based knowledge not only in Science but all subjects. This training is through ASSET, Inc. and made possible by donations from the Central Cambria Education Foundation. The CCEF is a nonprofit organization that helps our students participate in extra educational opportunities that our students would not be able to receive. If you are interested in learning more about the Central Cambria Education Foundation, please go to the www.ccsd.k12.pa.us website.

The teachers and students are also going to the participate in the Science It’s Elementary Program this year. The teachers were trained this past year and will teach the same Module this year. This was made possible by donations from Cambria CoGen Plant, Jackson Lions Club, and Somerset Trust Bank.
Thanks to our PTO and teachers and staff and everyone who helps in making Jackson Elementary School a great place to grow socially, emotionally, and academically. The PTO has been working hard on the new playground, putting in new benches, and cleaning the gardens, etc. We appreciate everyone’s hard work.

Thanks to Gamesa for donating a new scoreboard for our new Multipurpose Room. Thanks to Rich Bauer – Somerset Rural Electric and Glenn Coposky- Selectric Electrical Company for volunteering to install the new scoreboard donated by Gamesa.

The saying “it takes a village to raise a child” is so true. Thanks for all of your help!!

This past year we all have been working very hard to exceed student achievement for all students and meet the AYP guidelines on the PSSA. Once again, Jackson Elementary School has met this goal.

Many teachers have already been in to start organizing their rooms and becoming familiar with the layout of the facility. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we sift through boxes, schedules, bell systems, bus routes, and activities, knowing the first few weeks will bring additional changes and adjustments. Although many things are changing, our focus remains on promoting student success in a positive school environment. Our new 9-period schedule provides block scheduling in Language Arts and Math, as well as intervention and enrichment opportunities to support student achievement and growth.

The first day of school will provide ALL students with an opportunity for orientation and exploration, as teachers will spend the day helping students review schedules, floor plans, classes, expectations, and activities. Sixth grade students have been invited to a separate Orientation Boot Camp on Friday, August 19th to help make the transition to middle school less stressful. As you prepare students for the new school year, please review these revised and existing guidelines for a successful start!

The school day for Middle School and High School students begins at 7:37 am. Students must be in the building by this time or they are considered tardy. Dismissal is at 2:43 pm.
New bus routes in Ebensburg Borough will accommodate students who used to walk to the Middle School. Watch for bus routes to be posted in the local paper the week before school starts.
All Middle School and High School students will exit the buses in the front of the High School building and walk to breakfast or to their respective waiting areas.
Parent drop-off and pick-up for Middle School students is at the rear of the building complex near the new entrance and lobby.
Meet the Teacher Night for Middle School and High School parents will be held on Thursday, September 1st. An overview of the new building and schedule will be provided to interested Middle School parents in the auditorium at 5:30 pm. The Middle School Meet the Teacher session will run from 6:00 pm to 7:10 pm. The High School Meet the Teacher session will run from 7:15 pm to 8:45 pm. More information regarding Meet the Teacher Night will be sent home with students on the first day of school.
A Community Open House for the new Middle School is being planned for late September.
Middle School students are permitted to bring backpacks to school, but those must remain in their lockers during the school day.
Please remember to maintain a positive balance in your child’s lunch account.

Central Cambria Middle School is excited to be able to offer a one-day program aimed at preparing 6th grade students for a smooth transition to middle school. Middle school is a time in which students experience many different changes and are faced with a variety of challenges. Some of these changes occur physically/emotionally, socially, academically, and personally as per their individual experiences. For some students, transitioning from elementary school to middle school can be an exciting new adventure; however, for other students, it can be confusing and stressful. Students in transition may experience difficulty due to differences in school structure, teacher and academic expectations, forming new friendships, and peer pressure.

Whether students transition from elementary school to middle school or grade-to-grade, they need to be equipped with the skills and resources to successfully adapt to the anticipated changes. The goal of the program is to help students feel prepared to begin their middle school journey and will focus on developing study skills, setting goals, reducing stress and anxiety, making positive decisions, handling peer pressure, encouraging participation in activities, building friendships, and developing self-esteem and communication skills.

We hope that your child can participate in the program. In addition to the valuable skills the students will obtain, this is a great opportunity for them to build friendships as well. Students are not required to attend. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide transportation for this program. Please drop students off at the main entrance of the High School. For planning purposes, students who are attending must be registered by Monday, August 15th. Students will be provided with a pizza lunch. BACK TO SCHOOL AT CAMBRIA ELEMENTARY
As summer comes to an end, everyone at Cambria Elementary is preparing to get ready to come back to school. Our faculty has been working hard to ensure that our students have another successful, safe, and enjoyable school year. Throughout the summer, our K-5 classroom teachers have all attended the Institute for Inquiry as a requirement of the Investing in Innovation (i3) grant program. This five day summer training helped prepare our teachers to come back to school with new in-depth skills and strategies related to teaching and learning through inquiry.
When this time of year approaches things can get a little hectic so, here are a few reminders………
☺ Please check your child’s lunch account balance.
☺ A suggested, but not required, student supply list for each grade level is posted on the Cambria Elementary website under the navigation tab on the left.
☺ Students should arrive at school no earlier than 8:20 a.m. Students will not be permitted in their classroom before this time and must wait in the front vestibule until the 8:20 a.m. bell rings.
☺ Classes begin promptly at 9:00 a.m.; however, we ask that students be in their classrooms by 8:45 a.m.
☺ Parents who wish to pick up their child every day must sign a dismissal contract (available in the office). Parents who do not pick up their child on a daily basis must write a note to the teacher in the student planner.
☺ We consider the matter of individual student dress to be the responsibility of the parents. Any type of dress or grooming that is disruptive will not be permitted. Clothing with inappropriate slogans or advertising is not permitted.
☺ Parent pick-up procedures for students at the end of the day will be the same as last year. However, students are encouraged to ride the bus home. Please review the August Chalkboard for details on how to get a green card with your child’s name on it if you need a new one for this school year.

Central Cambria School District Achieves AYP!

Congratulations to our students, teachers, and administrators for their continued efforts towards achieving academic success in the classroom and on the PSSA.
Recently received reports indicate that Central Cambria School District has met the targets for Performance, Participation, Attendance, and Graduation to achieve Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the 2010/2011 school year! The PA state goals for this school year (2010-11) are 67% of students scoring at Proficient or higher in Mathematics and 72% of students scoring at Proficient or higher in Reading.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education uses the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) to determine AYP performance. As measured by the PSSA, students' scores fall into one of four performance levels:
• Advanced (highest)
• Proficient
• Basic
• Below Basic (lowest)

Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), as part of the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), holds LEAs accountable to students, parents, teachers, and the community. The law states that all students must reach the Proficient level or higher in Reading and Mathematics by 2014. More detailed information on district and building performance will be available in the coming weeks. Parents can expect Individual Student Reports to be sent home at the beginning of the new school year.

Moving Day is Finally Here!

After years of pondering, planning, pouring, pounding, and painting, the new middle school is almost ready! Summer maintenance crews are making many trips from 205 Highland Avenue to the new building, bringing desks, books, supplies, computers, file cabinets and sports equipment to fill the rooms of 206 Schoolhouse Road! While construction crews continue to finish the final details of the project, everything but dust is being moved into place so that teachers and students are ready for the start of the new school year. Over the next few weeks, site work will continue as the construction project wraps up inside and the focus shifts to completing exterior areas. Summer Camps Held at CCHS for Middle School Students

The Central Cambria High School hosted a variety of summer camps for interested students in grades 5 through 8. These camps were offered, for a fee, from the weeks of June 13-17 and June 27-July 1 where students attended from 9am to noon daily.

The goal of these camps was to teach younger students a variety of useful tools in the fields of creative technologies. The offered camps include: “Anatomy of a Computer” Camp, where students had the ability to explore the components of a computer to discover how they work, taught by Dr. Karwoski; Art, Design, and Technology Camp, where students learned how to take a technological approach to graphic design, taught by Mr. Dumm; and Video and Broadcasting Camp, where students could learn about the broadcasting field and gain a greater appreciation for audio-visual technology, taught by Mrs. Shirk.

Anatomy of a Computer had the students travel through the inner workings of a computer, to the writing of a computer game. The students learned more than they ever would have thought possible in such a short time. Dr. Karwoski stated, “[he] is looking forward to having these “tech guys” in class.”

“The ‘technology in the arts’ workshop was a lot of fun” stated Mr. Dumm. The students got hands on experience working with digital photographs, and editing digital imagery using Adobe Photoshop. They created monsters and creatures from their own photos, and learned how some of today's top special effects professionals use similar technology in the movies and shows they watch every day.

The students also wrote, directed, and helped film a short movie which was filmed digitally and edited on the computer. The ten minute film was a ghost story about a haunted middle school, filmed in and around the Central Cambria campus. Mr. Dumm found the final product was very amusing and entertaining. “We were very happy to see such enthusiastic students taking a bit of time out of their summer break to learn more about this field, and explore their interests” said Mr. Dumm.

Students enrolled in the Broadcasting Camp were able to complete many different projects reported Mrs. Shirk including learning different camera shots, storyboarding and filming their own movie, creating a stop motion film, as well as broadcasting the daily news from Central Cambria High School’s CCTV Studio. Students were able to learn many new programs including conversion software, movie maker, and AVS editor. "The best part of the experience for me was seeing the students’ excitement and creativity towards each project they undertook," stated Mrs. Shirk.

All teachers involved in the summer camps acknowledged the great importance of continuing education into the summer months for all students and the great opportunity that the summer camps had to extending the curriculum in a hands on forum for those enrolled students.

To promote the idea of living a healthy and active lifestyle, CCMS held it’s annual “Fit and Fun” Field Day on Friday, June 3. In the morning 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students got a chance to listen to and interact with area professionals who are experts in a number of health, wellness, and safety topics. After a picnic lunch, students moved outside to enjoy the beautiful weather as they participated in a number of games and activities ranging from inflatable obstacle courses and kickball games to water balloon tosses and four-way tug-of-war matches. The highlight of the day came at the end as several lucky students, who had earned chances thanks to their exemplary behavior, seized the opportunity to dunk ten different teachers in a dunking booth in front of the school. Students and teachers agreed that “Fit and Fun” Field Day was truly a “splash!”

Central Cambria's Arts programs are once again in the spotlight, as 8th grader Kayla Anna received an Achievement Award from the Allied Artists of Johnstown for her artwork exhibited in the 2011 Greater Johnstown Young Artists Exhibit, held at the Cambria County Community Arts Center in Westmont.

CCMS Summer Camps Offer a Chance to Explore Broadcasting, Creative Design, Math and Computers!

Eliminate that summer vacation boredom by joining us in week long, hands-on summer learning camps for middle school students. These exciting, engaging, active learning experiences are being offered by Central Cambria teachers and are open to any students who are currently in grades 5-8. These sessions may lead to new friendships, new hobbies, or even new career interests!

Want to be in television broadcasting or to create a film project? If so, Mrs. Michelle Shirk’s “Video and Broadcasting Camp” is perfect for you. Through the use of the high school’s audio-visual room students can experience life in front of the camera, behind the camera and in the director’s chair.

Mrs. Debbie Winn’s math camp extraordinaire will employ hands-on activities, games and real life manipulatives like restaurant menus and checkbooks to envelop students into the exciting world of applied mathematics.

Mr. Brian Dumm’s “Art, Design and Technology Camp” will introduce students to the use of technology in graphic design. Camp members will gain a deeper understanding of various pieces of technology and equipment that can be used and will then apply this knowledge to the visual arts. Students may use graphic software, visual tools, digital photography, video gaming and design, Photoshop, web design, digital imaging, and more to create dynamic works of art.

Students in Dr. Joseph Karwoski’s “Anatomy of a Computer” session will have the opportunity to learn just what it takes to make a computer run. Students will play the part of Computer Mechanic as they look inside the machines to learn about their basic workings – from the inside, out!

Mrs. Kimberly McDermott, middle school principal and secondary curriculum director is always surprised by the students waiting at the entrance at 7:00 am, or the students who linger on the front lawn at dismissal. It is obvious that they want to extend their middle school experience for a few extra minutes each day. Why not turn those minutes into hours of fun, friendship, discoveries, and memories that will last long after the doors of the middle school close forever!

Central Cambria school board member Thomas Woods believes these camps have something for every student. “Students always ask for hands-on, practical, enjoyable learning experiences, and these four teachers created dynamic, diverse learning opportunities to match those requests. Logistical challenges notwithstanding, it behooves me why anyone would not jump at the opportunity to join the fun with Dr. Karwoski, Mr. Dumm, Mrs. Winn and Mrs. Shirk.”.

Camps will meet during the weeks of June 13, June 20 and/or June 27. Participation in all camps will require students to pay a fee based on the hours, the level of interest, and the number of students registered for each session. We hope to provide these sessions for no more than $40 - $50 per session. The registration deadline has been extended until Tuesday, May 17.

CARLSBAD, Calif. (May 5, 2010)- Amid a dramatic backdrop of school budget cuts, the NAMM Foundation today announced the results of its 11th annual "Best Communities for Music Education" survey, which acknowledges schools and districts across the U.S. for their commitment to and support of music education in schools. This year, Central Cambria School District in Ebensburg, PA has been designated a "Best Community."

The announcement came today as a part of NAMM's "National Wanna Play Music Week," (May 3-7) a week-long promotion designed to encourage people of all ages and skill levels to experience the proven benefits of playing music.

As the economy hinders state and local school budgets to adequately support music education, the 175 school districts named by the NAMM Foundation demonstrate a commitment to providing music education for their students.

The 2010 designation as a Best Community for Music Education comes at a precarious moment, as school districts nationwide are voting on their budgets in the coming weeks. According to the NAMM Foundation, this "Best Communities" designation represents not only a distinction worthy of pride, but a call to action for local music education advocates to help preserve - and in some cases, save - their current music education programs.

"Past designees have benefited by receiving this mark of excellence, but this year's economic environment is challenging for many communities," says Mary Luehrsen, executive director of the NAMM Foundation. "Even having earned this designation, schools are working hard to keep programs strong in the midst of some of the deepest education cuts seen in decades. We hope this award presented at this critical time will compel communities to re-consider cuts that we know are in play in many districts across the U.S. "

"This year's survey data reaffirms the power of community support and commitment for music education as critical elements in quality schools," added Luehrsen. "Music education plays a vital role in student success in school and in life. We urge schools nationwide to include comprehensive music and arts education planning in their competitive federal 'Race to the Top and Investing in Innovation' funding programs to sustain and expand local music education initiatives."

The 2010 survey, which opened on Thursday, January, 17, and ended Friday, March 12, was available to all districts nationwide. This year, teachers and school district administrators, representing communities across the country, participated in the web-based survey. The districts were measured across curricular and programmatic criteria as well as public support of their music programs. The survey was developed and administered by The Institute for Educational Research and Public Service, an affiliate of the University of Kansas.

Each school receiving the "Best Communities" designation scored in the 80th percentile or higher in the survey's grading process. Participants in the survey answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and other relevant factors in their communities' music education programs. The responses were verified with district officials, and advisory organizations reviewed the data.

Throughout the survey's 11 years, many districts have reported that making the "Best Communities" list has had a positive effect on their ability to preserve music for their students.

National Walk at Lunch Day April 27, 2011

With the warm spring weather finally making an appearance in Ebensburg, everyone seems to be itching to get outside to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Students at Central Cambria Middle School had the opportunity to take advantage of a beautiful day as they celebrated National Walk @ Lunch Day on April 27. National Walk @ Lunch day is “an extension of WalkingWorks, a Blue Cross and Blue Shield program created to help consumers live healthier lives and reduce unnecessary medical costs due to physical inactivity.” It is an idea that was designed while keeping those with busy schedules in mind in hopes that it may help jump-start a daily walking or fitness routine and improve national health.

Schools were encouraged to join in the Walk @ Lunch movement by incorporating walking into the school day as a first step toward long-term prevention of health problems for future generations. During gym classes and study halls, CCMS students made their way outside to the track get their hearts pumping for the recommended 30 minutes of physical activity. Not only did the mid-day walk invigorate their bodies and elevate their moods, but it stimulated their minds and enabled students to focus on their afternoon tasks in the classroom, as well. National Walk @ Lunch Day was a success at Central Cambria, and we look forward to observing this day for years to come.

Cambria and Jackson Elementary Schools Awarded 1st Place Ribbons Spring 2011 Interscholastic Reading Competitions

The Red Team from Cambria Elementary and the Red Readers Team from Jackson Elementary returned home on Thursday evening, April 12, 2011 with First Place Blue Ribbons at the Interscholastic Reading Competition hosted by the Meyersdale Area School District. The students worked extremely hard to achieve their ribbons and should be commended for a job well done!

BOLD Program - Boys Only Leadership Development

The 4th and 5th grade boys from Cambria and Jackson Elementary Schools participated in the Boys Only Leadership Development on Saturday, April 10, 2011 at Jackson Elementary School. The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Men’s Basketball Team volunteered the whole day. They helped with team building skills. Jeanne Smith from Boy Scouts presented information and Kelly Hughes from the CC Conservation District presented information about wildlife. Officer Phil talked about making good choices. This program correlates with our Anti Bullying Program.

The students had fun getting to meet new friends and learning how to be better decision makers. Thanks to Miss Dishart and Mrs. Marcus for organizing the whole event. Thanks to the Ebensburg Youth League for donating the use of the snow cone machine. Thanks for everyone who participated and contributed to this worthwhile cause.

Central Cambria’s Kelsey Dolan Places first at PTI Showcase Event: PITTSBURGH TECHNICAL INSTITUTE’S VISIONS AND VOICES SHOWCASES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ARTISTIC TALENTS

For the ninth year in a row, Pittsburgh Technical Institute (PTI) hosted Visions and Voices High School Student Show, an art, design and film festival. This is the first year that CCHS has participated and entered work though. The exhibit includes artwork from 389 high school students in over 79 school districts. The categories of artwork include: painting, CAD, web design, jewelry, sculpture, drawing, photography, video film, interactive media and ceramics. With more than 700 works of art submitted to Visions and Voices, Central Cambria is proud to announce that Kelsey Dolan received First place – for her photograph entitled “Secret Place.”

Commenting on the submissions, Susan Rosa, PTI’s Visual Communications Coordinator, said, “The caliber of the students’ creativity improves every year. It’s incredible; I admire the talents of these young adults. Visions and Voices is an opportunity for us to showcase their work and recognize the teachers who have guided their artistic and design development.”

The guidance behind Kelsey’s submission is Central Cambria’s Art Instructor, Ms. Chris Irwin. Upon elaborating on Kelsey’s piece, Ms. Irwin stated that the photo was originally handed in as a homework assignment in her Photography/Digital Media I class. In this class, students learn that, Photography is a recognized fine art form, exhibited in museums alongside oil paintings and sculptures. In the past, these were accomplished through 35 mm & other films, today it is primarily completed digital format.

Students enrolled in Digital Media I, learn that there is more to photography than just picking up a camera & shooting a picture. Students incorporate compositional techniques, color theory and other art processes that they have learned in their foundations art classes in addition to the techniques more exclusive to photographs to create & design high caliber prints such as the one submitted by Kelsey.

Part of the art curriculum at the Central Cambria High School includes “art career awareness” and “exhibition of art” to correspond with the PA Academic Standards. Each year, Mrs. Irwin encourages students like Kelsey Dolan to exhibit their quality pieces & provides them with information about local venues where students can receive distinction for their high quality artwork.

GOLD Program - Girls Only Leadership Development

Here are pictures from our annual GOLD program (Girls Only Leadership Development). It was held on April 2nd at Jackson Elementary School. There were about 60 girls from Cambria and Jackson Elementary Schools. This program correlates with our Anti-Bullying Campaign at Central Cambria. The girls learned how to make better choices, be themselves, accept responsibility, distress, use technology appropriately, and to have fun and meet new friends. Thanks for the donations and everyone who helped make this a day success!! A special thanks to Miss Dishart and Mrs. Marcus, the Americorp Workers at Jackson Elementary School, who organized the whole event.

Blood Drive

Every two seconds someone in the United States needs a blood transfusion with the demand for blood increasing over holidays. To assist with the demands of the Memorial Day holiday weekend, the Cambria Elementary school will be sponsoring a blood drive.

Cambria Elementary students will be soliciting family members and friends to donate blood. The School’s blood drive will be held on May 10 from 2:00 to 7:00 in the Cambria Elementary gymnasium. Anyone who is interested in donating blood or volunteering may sign up with any elementary student after April 21st.

CCMS Students Are "Pint Size Heroes"

Every two seconds, someone somewhere needs a blood transfusion, and with the harsh winter weather that we have been experiencing this year, the Red Cross' blood supply is extremely low. Adults have around ten pints of blood in their bodies and one pint is given during a donation. This single pint of blood can save up to three lives. To help meet this need, the Red Cross holds more than 200,000 blood drives every year, and at Central Cambria Middle School we tried our best to do our part by holding our own Pint Size Heroes Blood Drive on Tuesday, February 22 from 2:30 to 6:30 P.M. in the cafeteria. Since CCMS students are too young to be able to donate blood themselves, their job was to recruit adult donors to help meet the need. Students were asked to talk to parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, neighbors, and anyone over the age of 16 who were willing to help us out. As always, our amazing students rose to the occasion. With their help and the help of community members we were able to donate 42 pints of blood to the Red Cross in only four short hours! This year's Blood Drive was our most successful one yet and special thanks go out to the Red Cross staff, students, donors, and everyone who helped to make Pint Size Heroes a success.

CCMS Continues Bullying Prevention Efforts

Bullying is a painfully prevalent issue at schools across the country, and it seems that the most trouble comes when students are in their adolescent years. Young girls often find themselves wrapped up in a form known as relational aggression – an under-the-table method of social isolation and rejection which has serious consequences for the victim. Self-worth and self-esteem come at a premium during these formative years, and this camouflaged mode of bullying diminishes both. By partnering up with the Women’s Help Center, Central Cambria Middle School continues to combat this trend and keep the anti-bullying efforts in the forefront of their extracurricular programming.

On Friday, January 28th, Prevention Specialist Lauren Spangler from the Women’s Help Center visited 7th and 8th grade girls’ physical education classes with a presentation on relational aggression and cliques. The program is based upon the book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman and aims “to open the eyes of adolescent females and to promote empathy and unity among girls.”

After reviewing the reflections of students who sat through the presentation, it seems the message that the speaker was trying to convey came through loud and clear. Most students especially appreciated how the program was conducted in a way that they could relate to both the speaker and the material. One eighth grade student remarked, “The presentation was good because it showed us that we all know how it feels to be bullied and none of us like it. The information was very important. It showed us things that can help us or help stop bullying.” Another commented, “After the presentation I wanted to apologize to every girl I might have said something mean to. You have the power and you can help change someone else’s life.” We hope to invite the Women’s Help Center back next year to continue to spread their powerful message.

Science It's Elementary Program

As mentioned at the beginning of the school year, Jackson Elementary School received money through Title 1 to participate in the "Science It's Elementary" Program, a state-of-the-art, research-based curriculum. This includes K-5 teachers receiving professional development training on inquiry based learning and hands-on experiments to teach our children to be 21st Century Learners. The teacher trainings will take place in January and February and the "Science It's Elementary" lessons will be taught the last nine weeks in every classroom K-5. These lessons correlate with the Pennsylvania Science Standards. There are different modules presented at different grade levels. Module 1 consists of Kindergarten - Fabric, 1st grade - Weather, 2nd grade - Changes, 3rd grade - Rocks and Minerals, 4th grade - Electric Circuits, and 5th grade - Levers and Pulleys. CAMBRIA ELEMENTARY RECEIVES $541,190.00 INVESTING IN INNOVATION i3 GRANT

On January 11, 2011 the Central Cambria School District received an official letter from ASSET Inc., Pittsburgh, PA notifying them that the Investing In Innovation i3 Grant application submitted by Dr. Luke Lansberry was accepted and approved! Achieving Student Success Through Excellence in Teaching (ASSET Inc.) obtained $26 Million in Grant Money from the U.S. Department of Education to be used for creating a National Model for teaching in Pennsylvania Schools. “The Cambria Elementary faculty is committed to working closely with Dr. Lansberry and ASSET Inc. to develop a model for the nation at Cambria Elementary,” said Jo-Ann Semko, Central Cambria Education Association President. The value of this five year i3 Grant opportunity is estimated to be worth approximately $20,815.00 per teacher. Total estimated i3 Grant value: $541,190.00.

As part of ASSET’s Investing in Innovation i3 Grant initiative, Dr. Lansberry and teachers at Cambria Elementary will engage in a five-year journey to enhance teacher effectiveness and student achievement. All costs associated with the Advanced Professional Development Program will be paid for through the i3 Grant. Advanced Professional Development (PD) Program Benefits that Cambria Elementary will receive include:

Ongoing, higher level PD for all science teachers at Cambria Elementary

Pirate Camp

Pirate Camp was held at JES July 13, 14, and 15th for JES students entering 2nd grade this coming school year. Twenty five students took part in the camp that was planned and taught by Debbie Winn, Deanna Deetscreek, and Jolene Dishart. Throughout the week the students were engaged in a variety of educational activities in numerous subjects. The camp incorporated math by teaching the students how to meaure planks in cm, inches, and feet, after measuring and recording their information they got to "walk the plank. Language arts was incorporated by having the students play pirate vocabulary bingo, singing pirate chanties, and having pirate stories read to them. The students searched for their treasure (snack) and booty using treasure maps and compass rose. We conducted a sink/float science experiment. Each student constructed an aluminum foil boat, predicted how many pennies it would take to sink the boat, then went outside to test their predictions by placing their boats in tubs of water and counting how many pennies it took to actually sink the boat.

Magnificent Math Camp

Magnificient Math Camp was held Tuesday July 6- Friday July 13 from 9:00-11:00 at Jackson Elementary School. The camp was open for students from Jackson Elementary entering 4th and 5th grade. Twenty fourth and fifth grade students took part in the camp that Debbie Winn, first grade teacher, and Jolene Dishart, AmeriCorps, planned and taught. The students spent the week engaging in a variety of math activities such as writing checks and balancing their our own checkbooks, playing restaurant (taking orders, adding totals, figuring tax and tip, making change), playing quizmo (bingo with math facts), making fraction pizzas, and constructing figures with geometric shapes.

Summer Reading Camp

A Summer Reading Camp was held at Jackson Elementary from June 14-18, 2010. Twenty-two students who will enter the 1st through 3rd grades attended the camp. The students worked in small groups and whole group to practice and reinforce reading strategies they learn throughout the school year. At the end of the camp each student received a book to take home. The camp was taught by Mrs. Winn and Mrs.Deetscreek.

On Tuesday, June 8, 2010 Kate Wolf, Stephen Traino, Melissa Douglas and Susan Dixon received “ACE Outstanding Educator Awards” from the Central Cambria Education Foundation.

Kate Wolf, elementary guidance counselor and director of the high school music theater program, was described as a caring, compassionate, dedicated member of the Central Cambria community. In addition to offering counseling services to both elementary schools Kate has engaged students in such musical theater experiences as “The Wizard of Oz”, “Grease” and “Godspell” in recent years. Kate coordinates an enormous charitable program that reaches many needy families in our community at Christmas and she initiated a summer music theater camp for elementary students in the district. While much of Kate’s work is “behind the scenes”, her colleagues recognize and appreciate the tireless enthusiasm and boundless energy that she contributes to the district.

Stephen Traino, a member of the Middle School faculty, was glowingly recognized by his peers for the innumerable contributions he has made to the district over the past 34 years. Stephen was described as a “role model” for both students and his faculty colleagues, an “amazing educator” who energizes students in his classroom and a person who has served the district’s children in a plethora of ways during his career. Stephen inspires students, counsels and mentors younger teachers and enhances the quality of the middle school experience for students and teachers alike.

Melissa Douglass is a music teacher at Jackson Elementary School. Her peers nominated her for this award because “she works incredibly hard for the school and her students”. Melissa is known for her creative teaching methods as well as her willingness to go “above and beyond the call of duty” to nurture young student musicians. Susan’s love for teaching and love of music inspires her students.

High school guidance counselor Susan Dixon was described by her peers as the “consummate professional” who is “utterly dedicated to the children she serves”. “Susan takes her responsibilities as a guidance counselor very seriously. Her dedication to her job is admirable and inspiring”. Susan is a caring soul who nurtures students as well as her district colleagues. “Through her kindness, wit and sense of humor, Susan promotes the feeling of family among her colleagues”. The finale of Susan’s peer nomination asserted that she adheres to the spirit of Steve Prefontaine’s assertion that “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift”.

Sixth Annual Central Cambria Red Devil Classic

The Sixth Annual Central Cambria Red Devil Classic was held at the Ebensburg Country Club on Friday, June 25, 2010. Proceeds from the event benefited the Central Cambria Education Foundation (CCEF).

An absolute text-book summer day boosted the spirits of 80 golfers who gathered to raise funds for a most worthy cause. Approximately 40 local businesses and individuals lent their support through tee sponsorship, cash and door prize donations, as well as goods and services.

The golf course was in excellent condition, which aided the first place team of Randy Seymour, Joe Cavalier, Jim Seymour and Ed Kramer in coming in 17 under par. Additionally, Dean Collins, Tom Cardellino and Mike Springer pocketed skill prizes during the event.

All of the golfers enjoyed a barbeque lunch of ham burgers, hot dogs and sides. The outing concluded with a chicken dinner and the awarding of skill, place and door prizes. Please join us next year on June 24, 2011!

Beating the Odds Rally

For the past 20 years, the Beating the Odds Foundation has been convincing students that anything is possible if they follow their dreams. On Monday, May 10, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students from Central Cambria joined other school districts from across Blair and Cambria Counties at a rally meant to inspire them to overcome adversity and realize their goals. The Blair County Ballpark in Altoona transformed into an outdoor classroom as a variety of special guests helped to convey the uplifting message.

Speakers, professionals, and even the Golden Knights parachute squad joined together to deliver the meaning of the day. The most noted of the presenters was Quinton Aaron, star of the blockbuster movie, “The Blind Side.” Much like his character in the film, Aaron found himself facing some difficult obstacles, but was able to persevere and become a “Quarterback for Life.”

Though the weather was cool, the positive effect of the rally left students, chaperones, and teachers alike with a warm heart and a bright outlook for the future.

CC Visual Art Has Strong Spring Showings

Central Cambria Middle School visual art students won 5 out of a possible 6 Achievement Awards at the 2010 Greater Johnstown Young Artists Exhibit. Students from the high school also took home 2 more awards in their division. Art programs from 16 local schools were featured in this year’s show from grades 6 - 12. The juried show is the final of several very strong spring exhibits in which Central Cambria students annually participate. Art work from all grade levels was also featured in this year’s “Artists of the 21st Century” exhibit at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Loretto, as well as the Ebensburg “Art in Bloom” exhibit. Congratulations to all artists for their hard work and achievements.

Girls in the Middle Retreat 2010

The Girls in the Middle Retreat took place on Friday, March 26th with over 80 girls participating. The retreat built upon our Pyramid of Success ™ program and consisted of workshops on building positive relationships, teambuilding & cooperation, diversity & community service, self-esteem, creativity, leadership, team spirit & condition and skill, problem solving & positive attitude, and health & wellness. The goal was to foster new relationships among the girls, educate them on topics aimed at building their self-esteem, and prepare them for current and future conflicts that may arise. The girls had opportunities to showcase their talents in the problem solving workshop, create cards for residents of Rebekah Manor in the diversity & citizenship workshop, practice their basketball moves in the leadership, team spirit & condition & skill workshop, and learn different styles of dance in the health and wellness workshop, just to name a few. Additionally, the girls participated in group discussions, received valuable information, and celebrated old and new friendships. This event could not have happened without the help and support of the Central Cambria Education Foundation, Central Cambria PTSO, Sheetz, Inc., parent and community volunteers, teachers, staff, The PMSC/AmeriCorps Program, St. Francis University’s Women’s Basketball Team, Girl Scouts of Talus Rock, The Women’s Help Center, Communities in Schools of the Laurel Highlands and Le Dance Academie.

Central Cambria Music

Not long ago a group of Central Cambria students returned to the school’s auditorium for a “Wizard of Oz” cast reunion gathering. An eclectic smattering of young people milled around the stage conversing on topics as diverse as the colors of the rainbow until Mr. Nagy sat down at the piano. It was as if perching himself upon the piano bench activated a magnetic vacuum that drew students to the piano’s periphery. At the first depression of worn ivory piano keys all chatter ceased, students stood taller and carefree laxidicalism gave way to a more focused demeanor. A discrete nod of the head from the maestro brought twenty disjointed voices into a perfect show tune cadence. Onlookers were sure to notice the smiling faces and joyful deportment of the young carolers. After uniformly marching through the first segment of the tune, spontaneously factions of voices broke off into a multi-dimensional harmony. As the final key strokes were played, with the sound of the music still echoing off the walls, an anonymous student intoned, “We still got it!” And if fact, they did. It was a shame that the music had to end.

At Central Cambria, music is the force that shapes many of our most treasured memories. From elementary school concerts through high school graduation, music serenades many of the most unforgettable moments of the children’s education. Piano music is a tradition worth continuing, it is a blessing worth our continued investment and support.

Central Cambria school district is clearly endowed with great musicians but currently burdened by a woefully inadequate piano. For the last five decades, yes fifty years, the district has tickled the same ivories. It is time for a change, time for an upgrade, time for the current instrument to retire after many years of admirable service which includes propelling the district into the distinguished fraternity of the “Top 100 Schools for Music” designation by the National Association of Music Merchants.

Our piano no longer is able to hold a tune. Multiple tunings are required prior to school concerts and district productions. If the piano is tired, it has good reason to be weary. The piano serves as a catalyst to a plethora of district events. All four of the district’s schools utilize the instrument. From elementary school concerts, to upper level band/chorus concerts/shows, to high school musical theater productions, to the annual prom march, graduation ceremonies and selected community events, the piano works hard during the school year. Our piano’s best days are clearly behind it and now we are faced with the prospect of recruiting its replacement.

Please help us continue to jettison the sound of piano accompaniment through the halls of our school and into the memories and hearts of our students. By contributing to the “Music on a Grand Scale – Piano Purchase Project” you invest in the future of music in our district.

Central Cambria Students Continue to Reap the Benefits of Dual Enrollment

In the 09/10 school year 99 Central Cambria High School juniors and seniors earned a total of 703 college credits through dual enrollment programs set up through the CCHS Guidance Office, Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, Mount Aloysius College and the University of Pittsburgh. Students had the opportunity to enroll in any or all of sixteen different dual enrollment courses offered at the high school. A number of students elected to earn college credits in more than one class at more than one institution. Due to funds obtained through a grant, the credits were available at no cost to the students. The chart below shows what costs the students would have incurred at a typical state institution (Slippery Rock Univ.), a state related institution (PSU – main campus), and typical private institutions (St. Francis Univ. & Duquesne Univ.), had they not opted to take part in the dual enrollment program.

Bear Buddies Club at CCMS

A group of young seamstresses are putting their sewing skills to good use, and hoping to brighten the lives of homeless children at the same time. Members of the “Bear Buddies” club have been busy cutting patterns, learning hand embroidery stitching to create smiling bear faces, then machine sewing and stuffing cuddly little Teddy bears. When the bears are completed they will be donated to an area shelter for homeless families. It is the student’s wish that each bear will bring a smile to any sad faces.

On December 16th, the 4th and 5th grade chorus members visited the Jackson Senior Center to sing Christmas Carols with the Jackson Township Senior Activity Center members. Everyone had fun!! This has become an annual event.

The holidays are fast approaching and in this season of hope and giving, the American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes, Inc. have teamed up for the third year to invite Americans to “send a touch of home” to United States service members and veterans across the country and abroad. This year, our Central Cambria Middle School students took part in the Holiday Mail for Heroes program by writing and sending holiday greeting cards to servicemen and women, veterans, and families of service members. On Wednesday, November 25 students had the chance to write, decorate, and design holiday cards to send to those who currently serve or have served our country. Thanks go out to all of the students and teachers for their help and cooperation in honoring our troops during this holiday season!

Sheetz Presents Gift to Central Cambria Education Foundation

Central Cambria Education Foundation (CCEF), the fund-raising arm of the Central Cambria School District, was the recipient of a $2,500 donation from the Sheetz Corporation at the October 29 grand opening of Sheetz along Route 22 in Ebensburg.

Several CCEF Board members were special guests at the Sheetz grand opening, accepting the check from Joe Sheetz and store employees. According to Dennis Simmers, President of the CCEF Board, “To say we were surprised and delighted would be a vast understatement. The Board is very grateful to Sheetz for selecting CCEF as their community action partner in commemorating their new store.”

Simmers said, “Aside from the unique opportunity to participate in the unveiling of a multi-million dollar enterprise, our Board was presented a monetary gift from Sheetz to forward CCEF’s mission in the community. This generous donation will benefit the students of the Central Cambria School District, and we are very grateful for the support.”

A number of local and state officials, residents of Ebensburg Center, members of the business community at-large, as well as citizen enthusiasts of Sheetz were on hand for the CCEF presentation and grand opening.

During the gift presentation, Simmers expressed the Board’s appreciation and admiration in these challenging economic times. Speaking to Joe Sheetz and his local staff, Simmers praised Sheetz’ forward-looking attitude: “The CCEF Board would like to acknowledge Sheetz’ tenacity and courage in pressing on with this project. We wish you all of the best luck in your business endeavors.”

Simmers assured Sheetz that the gift proceeds would benefit the children and promised to follow-up with photographs of the projects it will sustain.

As you may know, flu related illnesses are spreading easily from person to person, and school-age children are one of the groups most affected. We are working closely with our school physician, Cambria County EMS and the Pennsylvania Department of Health to monitor flu conditions and make decisions about the best steps to take. Currently, we are seeing a slightly higher occurrence of respiratory related flu conditions in the school. We are taking steps to prevent the spread of flu in the Central Cambria School District. Strategies consist of basic every day approaches to limit the spread of germs. We want to keep the school open and functioning as normal for as long as possible.

Gateway Clipper Trip

On Tuesday, October 6th, the eighth grade students boarded the Gateway Clipper Ship “Princess” for an educational program entitled “Lord of the Mons: Steel, Coke, and Coal and the Men Who Moved Them”. The students learned about river life and the industrialists and immigrants who created the steel industry along the Monongahela River. Students were captivated by the interesting stories and numerous props that the speakers used to tell the story of the River City during the early 1900’s. They learned how their nationality played an important part in the type of jobs they may have held in the steel industry. Students dressed in fire-resistant clothing, examines how slag was produced, and had the opportunity to throw tow ropes to see how the boat was anchored.

After the presentation, students had an opportunity to visit the three decks on board the “Princess” while talking with friends, eating their lunches, and enjoying the beauty of the river. All seemed to enjoy the educational adventure. The Gateway Clipper staff made a special point to comment on the exceptional behavior of the students and their rapt attention during the presentation.

To Parents and Guardians of Pennsylvania’s Students:

In the spring of 2009, a new flu strain (known as pandemic influenza A/H1N1 or swine flu) appeared and quickly spread throughout the United States. Schools in Pennsylvania were impacted and a number had to close briefly due to the virus spreading so quickly. With the cooperation of our parents, we were able to minimize the overall impact of the flu virus.

Over the course of the summer, this new flu strain continued to produce illness in Pennsylvania, although not at the levels witnessed in May and June.

To combat this new flu strain, we plan to continue many of the measures previously put in place to protect your children. Additionally, new guidance from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now stipulates that a student with the flu will need to stay home until they are fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications (Tylenol, Motrin, etc.). In most cases, this would be anywhere from three to five days where your child would be kept home from school.

Your school will be taking steps to reduce the spread of infections like the flu. Frequent hand washing will be encouraged, and surfaces that are frequently touched or handled will be regularly cleaned and disinfected. If a child is sick, he or she will be moved to a sick room designated by the school, and you will be contacted to take your child home.

While school closure will remain an option, our current recommendations are to take such an action only if there is evidence that other measures are not working. School districts will work closely with their local and state health departments in making decisions. Each situation will be individually evaluated to assure the best course of action is taken to protect the children and school staff as well as minimize the burden and impact on affected families.

Many of you have questions about the availability and use of vaccines. Recently, persons between ages five and 24 were identified as a priority group to receive the vaccine against the new flu strain. The Department of Health estimates the first doses of the new vaccine will be available in October and details of distribution of the vaccine will be forthcoming.

We also expect to see illness due to the seasonal (or regular) flu in the coming fall and winter. The seasonal flu vaccine has been recommended for all school-aged children and is especially important for children with underlying health problems (like asthma and diabetes), since these conditions increase the risk for flu complications. Therefore, we encourage all parents to have their children annually vaccinated against seasonal flu. This vaccine will be available in the early fall, but it will not protect against the swine flu strain.

Information on the flu, and how you can protect your family, is available at www.health.state.pa.us, www.cdc.gov and www.flu.gov. For further information, contact your child’s school, your local health department, the Pennsylvania Department of Health at 1-877-PA-HEALTH.

Intelligent Tutoring System for the Structure - (ITSS)

What is Intelligent Tutoring System for the Structure – ITSS?

ITSS is a web based tutoring system that teaches students the structure strategy.

How does it work?

ITSS is interactive:
- The online tutor, I.T., models the use of the structure strategy for students.
- Students respond to questions posed by I.T.
- I.T. gives students immediate feedback on their answers. Students are then given more directions and multiple attempts to answer the questions.
ITSS lessons are based on science, social studies, sports and current events.
Students are given immediate feedback so they know exactly how they are doing.
Teachers are provided with reports that show student progress along with an administrative tool to view the student's answers to questions, scores on activities and daily progress.
Each student works at his/her own pace.
Teacher support will be provided by a teacher aide assigned to each classroom using ITSS. This aide will be provided to the district FREE
of cost, and paid for by the Pennsylvania State University grant. The aides will have the necessary clearances to work in the classrooms. The aides will ensure that the computers are accessible for ITSS and monitor the students during their ITSS use.

How will this benefit PSSA scores?

ITSS provides 95 lessons throughout the year and concludes with PSSA practice tests that will help the students apply the structure strategy in the PSSA tests.
Teachers and aides will be trained on the use of the structure strategy and how ITSS lessons work. They will also receive a teacher guide to the lessons and customized lessons to apply the students' skills in their classroom activities.

The Pennsylvania State University would like to request the participation of Central Cambria School District in this exciting project that can improve reading comprehension among our students and help the Pennsylvania State University evaluate the efficacy of the software in a rigorous randomized control study. The following are a list of eligibility criteria to participate in the study:

Students will need to have one-to-one access to a computer and earphones. The computer lab network connections must support all the students using the system concurrently. Each student workstation will need to have an internet connection with Internet Fox, Firefox, or Netscape installed as an available browser and the latest version of Java and Flash plug-ins.
The students will need to use the ITSS for approximately 60 minutes a week (this can be in one 1 hour session or two 30 minute sessions). Ideally, the students will use ITSS during the Language Arts or Social Studies periods.
The study will run as follows:
1. Grades 4 & 5 – 2009 - 2010 academic year
2. Grades 7 & 8 – 2010 – 2011 academic year
The school must be willing to allow a random assignment of two classrooms to the ITSS group and one to a control group. (If there are more than three classrooms, they can work with us in the groupings).
Both ITSS and control group students will receive a pre-test and post-test that lasts approximately 2 hours. The pre-tests will be conducted in September and the post-tests will be conducted in March.
All students, both the control and intervention groups, will be able to use the ITSS as soon as post-test data collection is completed, during the summer, and/or the following year.
There is NO cost to using the system.
They are also requesting a data file of student ID's (no identifying information) and the PSSA test scores for students be provided to the ITSS team, so that they may perform detailed analysis that can be useful to all stakeholders.

The "Siblings are Special" Program

What is the "Siblings are Special" Program?

The Pennsylvania State University has just been awarded federal stimulus funds through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to implement and evaluate the "Siblings are Special" Program. In addition, to improve child and family well-being, this stimulus-funded project will result in financial benefits for participating families and schools. The effectiveness of "Siblings are Special" Program will take the form of a randomized controlled study. That means half of volunteering families will be randomly chosen to be in the program and half will receive a book on siblings written for parents. All families will participate in data collection and the Penn State University will compensate all families up to $500 for participation. (Families receive $150 for each wave of data collection, and up to $25 for each child participating in this program. Families who receive the book will also be paid $25).

The program is to help siblings learn to cooperate, problem solve, and support each other. The goal is to help siblings develop these skills with each other, and then to carry these positive behaviors over to their relations with peers and general behavior at school and home.

How long is it?

The program consists of a series of 12 weekly after school sessions for groups of sibling pairs, and 3 monthly Family Fun Nights for these families.

Who is eligible?

Eligibility Requirements – The older siblings must be in the 5^th grade. The younger siblings can be in 2^nd through 4^th grades. Adoptive siblings are eligible. Single and two parent families are eligible.

The Pennsylvania State University will take all responsibility for hiring/training/supervising program staff. They will provide all materials. They will also conduct all data collection with families in parents' homes (with confidential procedures that have been approved by Penn State's Human Subjects Institutional Review Board). For teacher questionnaires, they will approach teachers directly, with parents' permission, and compensate $25 to the teachers who complete each questionnaire.

The Jackson Elementary School and Cambria Elementary School will also be compensated $500. These funds will be put into the Student Activities Funds so that every student benefits.

Red Devil Classic

The Red Devil Classic Golf Committee is pleased to announce that the 5th Annual Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, June 26th, 2009. This event will be held at Ebensburg Country Club and all proceeds will benefit the Central Cambria Education Foundation. Donations are currently being accepted to be used as prizes at this event.

The Central Cambria Education Foundation is a registered non-profit that provides funding in the arts, music, sciences, athletics and many other endeavors to the student body of Central Cambria. In response to the growing media coverage of influenza A (swine flu) the Central Cambria Health Care Team wanted to provide information to our families and students that can hopefully minimize the impact that this could have on our district.

Influenza A is a respiratory disease of pigs that normally doesn't infect humans. It has become contagious and is now spreading from human to human. This typically occurs the same way as seasonal flu: by coming in contact with infected people who are coughing and sneezing.

Ways to protect your family:

Stay at home when you are ill. Children should not come to school when they are sick.
Wash hands often with soap and water. Teach your child to wash their hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. (Have them sing the "Happy Birthday" song)
Do not touch your nose, eyes or mouth.
Cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing with you inner elbow.
Teach your children to stay three feet away from ill people.
Stay healthy by eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water and getting plenty of rest and exercise.
Seek care if you have flu like symptoms.
If you have a recent history of travel and experience mild flu-like symptoms stay home. If you feel symptoms worsen or become severe, contact your health care provider.

John Letizia Named to Central Cambria Education Foundation Board

John Letizia, President of Laurel Medical Supplies, has been named to the board of directors of the Central Cambria Education Foundation by a unanimous vote of the board at its March meeting. The Central Cambria Education Foundation is the nonprofit, fund-raising arm of the Central Cambria School District.

Letizia is a lifelong resident of the district who, along with his wife Angela, has two children, Maria and John, in elementary school.

"It was an honor to be asked to join the foundation," said Letizia. "Their mission is to support excellence in learning by helping to finance educational programs, activities, and projects in the school district. Few causes could be more worthy. I'm looking forward to working with the other members of the governing body to accomplish all that we can for the students of Central Cambria."

Letizia completes the nine-member board required by the nonprofit entity's bylaws. He joins Candy Long, Rich Bauer, Michele Bonerigo, Dennis Simmers, board president; Wendy DeYulis, vice president; Beth Ann Lombardi, secretary; Randy Seymour, treasurer; and John Kimball, Chair.

First Commonwealth Bank, Ebensburg Office, has donated $2,500 to the Central Cambria Education Foundation, the nonprofit, fund-raising arm of the Central Cambria School District. Funds were made available through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program through which qualifying businesses can contribute a portion of their state taxes.

"Through Pennsylvania's EITC Program, qualified businesses can make donations to the Central Cambria Education Foundation and receive tax credits equal to a percentage of their gift," says Wendy DeYulis, vice president of the Central Cambria Education Foundation board of directors and Senior Vice President/Trust Officer, First Commonwealth Bank.

The Central Cambria Education Foundation is an approved Educational Improvement Organization (EIO) in the EITC program. Gifts through the EIO program have enabled the foundation to provide more than 1,500 students with educational opportunities such as summer science, theater, art, and math programs that would just not be available any other way DeYulis explains.

"First Commonwealth is proud to support the community, and does so in many ways. This particular contribution allows us to enhance educational opportunities for children, in effect, by re-directing state tax dollars. The EITC program is an excellent way for you to donate and keep tax money working locally for a cause that you define," DeYulis says.

Jackson Elementary Library Fundraiser Set for May 9; Steeler Tickets and Football to be Raffled at Dinner

A raffle for two Pittsburgh Steeler tickets and an autographed James Harrison football is just one of the highlights planned for a fundraising dinner that will be held from 7 pm to 11 pm on Saturday, May 9, at Pit Stop 271 to benefit the library at Jackson Elementary School. Tickets for the dinner are $20 per person and can be purchased at Jackson Elementary, The Vinco Pharmacy, Pit Stop 271 or from any member of the volunteer committee that is organizing the event.

"Ticket sales will end May 2," said Doug Weigel, a member of the newly formed Jackson Elementary Library Fund Committee. "The donation for the ticket will be $20 per person, and this will include dinner, entertainment by John Stiffler, and entry into a prize raffle. We will be raffling off Pirate tickets, Curve tickets, restaurant gift certificates, pro and college sports team memorabilia and more. The Steeler tickets and autographed football will be included in a separate raffle."

Weigel said the goal of the fundraiser is to help make the Jackson Elementary Library one of the best in the region.

"The school district has decided to renovate the library," he noted. "They will be making it larger for the students and upgrading the collection of books. We would like to enhance the district's efforts by holding a fundraiser to provide more books and resources to fill up this added space. The library is extremely important in early childhood education. Reading is the foundation that will help carry students through the rest of their educational careers at Central Cambria and beyond. For this reason, we have put a volunteer committee together that's dedicated to enhancing this important resource for children."

Members of the Jackson Elementary Library Fund Committee are Craig and Tracy Gibson, John and Angela Letizia, Keith and Cathy Gilkey, Doug and Stacy Weigel, and Linette Duman.

Checks should be payable to Central Cambria Education Foundation, the nonprofit fundraising arm of the school district, with "Jackson Elementary Library Fund" in the memo section.

Central Cambria Takes First at PA Computer Fair

Three Central Cambria Computer Teams walked away winners in the 2009 PA State Computer Fair at the Altoona Campus of Penn State on Monday March 9th, 2009. There were 50 school projects entered in this year's regional fair, which was a qualifying event for the State Competition that will be held May 19th, 2009 at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA. Under the direction of Dr. Joseph P. Karwoski, the competitors and their prizes were:

Team 1: Programming Division - John Salguero, Scott Shay, and Nate Sloan - First Place
Team 2: Programming Division - Lonnie Ramirez - Second Place
Team 3: Informative Web Page Design - Collier (John) Devlin - First Place

The High School Competition involves a three-tiered selection process. The first tier occurs at the high school when the school sponsor / advisor selects a maximum of two projects from each of the eight categories to send to the regional fair. At the regional fair, the judges select a first, second, and third place winner. Each of these winning projects will receive an award but only the first place winners will advance to the state competition at Dickinson College in May. A different team of judges will evaluate the entries on display at Dickinson College. Monetary awards will be given to the projects that place first second, third and honorable mention in each of the categories.

Congratulations to John Salguero, Scott Shay, Nate Sloan, Collier Devlin, and Dr. Karwoski; who will be competing for the state championship this May at Dickinson College.

Central Cambria Education Foundation Honors Four Teachers

The Central Cambria Education Foundation honored four outstanding educators with ACE awards at the end of the school year.

The ACE Award was established by the Foundation to recognize one educator in each of Central Cambria's four schools who represents the qualities of achievement, caring and excellence. This year's winners are Robert Nikolishen, Central Cambria High School; Barri Dziack, Central Cambria Middle School; Lorraine Kukucka, Cambria Elementary; and Patty Burkey, Jackson Elementary.

"The mission of the Central Cambria Education Foundation is to support excellence in education by helping to develop, promote, and finance educational programs, activities, and projects in the school district," explained Beth Ann Lombardi, secretary of the foundation board of directors. "To demonstrate that support, the foundation believes it is important to recognize educators for their service and extraordinary commitment.

"Educators are nominated by their peers, and it is a pleasure to present these awards to truly outstanding individuals who have such a positive impact on colleagues and students. These teachers empower students to find the best within themselves. They are positive role models who have willingly volunteered their time and talents for years and who are responsible for motivating and inspiring students. For the ACE award winners, teaching isn't a job-it's a way of life. Central Cambria is proud to honor these four individuals who are extremely dedicated to the well-being of our students," Lombardi concluded.
